Yoshimo is a true neutral human bounty hunter and a potential temporary companion in Shadows of Amn.

Recruitment[edit | edit source]

Yoshimo is available to recruit from Chapter 1. You will meet him when you reach the second level of Irenicus's dungeon, Yoshimo claims himself to be an escaping prisoner just like you, and will offer to join the party to increase the survival chance.

Relationships[edit | edit source]

  • Yoshimo and Nalia de'Arnise bond over their shared thieving abilities. Yoshimo sees himself as something of a tutor for Nalia.

Quests[edit | edit source]

Jon Irenicus will reveal himself and Yoshimo to be his puppet after the prison cells tour in Spellhold, the party will speak of their disgust over this betrayal. Yoshimo will then leave and Imoen, who was previously held captive, will replace him.

During your escape you'll encounter Yoshimo again, he will attack you along with some other rogues under Irencius's order. It's also revealed that Irenicus has somehow cast a geas spell upon Yoshimo, forcing him to obey his will or die instantly. After Yoshimo's inevitable death, you may pick up his heart and bring it to a priest of Ilmater later to grant him final rest in the afterlife, you earn 200,000 XP for doing so.

However, if you dismiss him and ask him to stay in the Copper Coronet before entering Spellhold, he will not be mentioned by Jon Irenicus at all after the prison cells tour. And after you escape Spellhold and go back to the Copper Coronet, Yoshimo automatically dies when you step into the Copper Coronet and also leave no heart for you to pick up, making you confused about his death.

There's also a trick in to keep him alive, at least until Throne of Bhaal: dismiss him inside the building, trigger the spellhold event, return to the area where he's been left, upon entering the area, pause the game, if you're quick enough, you may engage him in dialogue to recruit him again, keeping him till the end of SoA. In order to transmit him to ToB, you can cast Imprisonment on him anywhere in the Watcher's Keep while in SoA. When in ToB, you can free him by the corresponding spell and join.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Due to his unavailability in Throne of Bhaal, it's not advised to use any permanent boost items on him.

He is the only pure class thief in the original Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

Yoshimo has the following items when joining the party: his katana which can only be used by him, a short bow, studded leather armor and some arrows.

Yoshimo could dual-class to fighter, but it is unlikely he will be in the party long enough to get his thief skills back. However, you can take advantage of this to majorly reduce his combat abilities immediately before his betrayal.

In-game description[edit | edit source]

When asked about his past, YOSHIMO seems disheartened that you are not already acquainted with his reputation. By his own account, he is apparently well known among people in the know, both as a daring rogue and as a dashing man about town. While the story sounds impressive, he seems ungainly for such exploits, possibly a bit more hapless than debonair. He wears it well, however, and perhaps even capitalizes on it. He seems to know that his kind of good-natured humor is well appreciated by most everyone he meets.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

Interestingly, the game files include a line of dialogue for Yoshimo when the party enter the Nine Hells, which suggests that the developers of the original game initially had different plans for his role in the plot.
