When Wraithform is cast, the wizard and all of his gear become insubstantial.

Description[]

When this spell is cast, the wizard and all of [their] gear become insubstantial. The caster is subject only to magical or special attacks, including those by weapons of +1 or better enchantment, or by creatures otherwise able to affect those struck only by magical weapons. The wizard also gains 25% resistance to magic damage. While in wraithform, the caster cannot cast either arcane or divine spells.

Gameplay[]

The caster applies this spell to self only.

When the spell is finished, the caster's sprite will display several visual effects such as a transparency fade and glow pulse effect for the duration of the spell. A sound effect is audible at the beginning and another when the spell expires. The creature's portrait will display an icon (No. 23 "Invulnerable").

Also, after the spell is cast a text display reads "Wraithformed".

The spell now will protect against all normal weapons (including missile ammunition). Obviously any magical or enchanted weapon will be able to bypass this protection.

Additionally, the spell also boosts the caster's Magical damage resistance by +25%, which is cumulative with other sources of magic damage resistance.

The spell deactivates arcane and divine spellcasting and also innate abilities (e.g. Bhaalspawn powers). Scrolls can still be used to cast spells in this wraithform.

This spell can be removed with any Dispel Magic effect, but it is immune to the Breach spell.

It appears that this spell can be "stacked", as it doesn't have the required coding to prevent that. If two of these spells were applied to the same caster, they would be able to receive additional magical damage resistance. Perhaps the developers missed fixing this issue, as similar spells were revised to prevent such things. Of course, since this form restricts Wizard spell casting, it would need to be applied with a scroll.

This icon indicates content from all original Baldur's Gate games, extensions included.
In the original Baldur's Gate series, Wraith Form – as it is spelled in those games – is only available in the base game, Baldur's Gate, as rare random treasure. This find is replaced with a scroll for "Dire Charm" when the add-on Tales of the Sword Coast is installed or in packages, such as the Original Saga, and the spell is completely removed from the series' second part – probably due to buggy behavior. [verification needed]

This icon indicates content from all Enhanced Editions of the Baldur's Gate games. May situationally encompass Siege of Dragonspear and The Black Pits I & II content as well.
In the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and its expansion Siege of Dragonspear, the scroll can only be found during a single encounter, making the spell otherwise available for a mage only if creating a new character for the add-on campaign.
The scroll is sold at three stores in Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition.

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Wizard spell Wraithform differs significantly from the one implemented in the BG game. For instance, the wizard can pass through small holes or narrow openings, even mere cracks, with all he wears or holds in his hands, as long as the spell persists. Additionally, no form of attack is possible when in wraithform, except against creatures that exist on the Ethereal Plane, where all attacks (both ways) are normal.
