A Wooden Stake is an essential item needed to permanently destroy a vampire that has been defeated and retreated from the battle area using its innate "Gas Cloud" form. The stake is used while the previously damaged vampire has retreated to its hidden coffin to recover.
The player will use these stakes in certain plot required portions of the game. Not all vampires defeated on the battlefield will be hunted down back to their coffin.
Description[]
“ | A sharpened, wooden stake that is marked with the holy symbols of Selune. Legend has it that staking a vampire will put them permanently to rest... although likely the vampire would have to be immobile (at rest) in order to do so properly. | ” |
Gameplay[]
The stakes can be bought at certain temples such as the temple of Helm and the temple of Lathander, as well as from the merchant Wallace in Trademeet. Aran Linvail will provide the party with some during the main quest in Chapter 3 if you side with the Shadow Thieves.
Ironically enough, they are also found in a couple of containers in Bodhi's hideout in the Lower Tombs under the Graveyard District.
Wooden stakes are only utilized about nine separate times, one of which takes place during SoD, eight in SoA, and none in ToB. In SoA, three are needed when siding with the Shadow Thieves in Chapter 3, used for the first assault upon Bodhi's Lair to stake the vampires Durst, Gellal, and Lassal once they retreat to their coffins. One is used in the Spellhold Dungeon to finish the vampire Dace Sontan after besting him in combat. Lastly, whether you sided with the Shadow Thieves or not, four are needed for the second assault on Bodhi's Lair in Chapter 6 to put an end to the vampires Valen, Del, and Tanova in the same coffin room as Chapter 3, and finally the head vampire Bodhi, forced to retreat into her gondola coffin.
The vampire Tsolak in Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear can also be staked in that game edition.
