Winter Wolves are a variety of Wolf which can be found as random spawns in some of the Cloud Peak Mountains areas and as fixed spawns on the Ice Island and on Level 3 of the labyrinth under Durlag's Tower. They are completely immune to cold damage and can breathe ice at their enemies, but attack only once per round. Given their high experience value and Winter Wolf Pelt drops (which can be sold for 500gp apiece at the Nashkel Store and 250gp elsewhere), they're highly sought after.

As both their melee and ranged attacks deal exclusively cold damage, high cold resistance can make fighting them incredibly easy. In particular, in Baldur's Gate LOGOBG00001 Icon SoDBaldur's Gate:

the Belt of Antipode can make a single character immune to all damage from Winter Wolves, making dealing with even a group of them trivial regardless of level.

Trivia[]

  • The official website for the original game, now archived, noted the following about this subspecies of wolves:[1]

The most dangerous member of the species, the winter wolf is known for its great size and foul disposition. Living only in chill regions, they can unleash a stream of frost from their lungs once every 10 rounds. The winter wolf is beautiful, with glistening white or silver fur and eyes of pale blue or silver.
