Baldur's Gate Wiki

Wilderness Clearing is a new area introduced in Baldur's Gate II - Enhanced Edition as part of Neera's Companion Quest Destroying the Order of Eight Staves.

Description:[]

A small sandy clearing, bordered by rocks and trees that block passage to the North and South. The area reuses some of the graphics from the Oasis. There is no points of interest or discoveries here outside of its role in the quest.

Gameplay[]

Although this is the site of the Red Wizards' ambush, nothing occurs until the ambush is triggered. The area has no random encounters or rest spawns, making it safe for preparation. Players may want to pre-place traps or delayed spells in the eastern section of the map, where the Red Wizards will appear.

Note: Wild mages: In the upcoming fight, wild magic is suppressed; wild mages cannot successfully cast spells. Plan preparations accordingly.

Only Neera can start the ambush. She must cast Nahal's Reckless Dwemer in the clearing; then the party must rest to begin the encounter.

Vicross enters with a large mixed group and addresses Neera, invoking her position in Thay, after which combat begins.

Once her followers are defeated, Vicross unleashes a Wild Surge that teleports both herself and the party away.

Aftermath[]

Following the confrontation with Szass Tam, the party is returned to the Wilderness Clearing. If Szass Tam was engaged twice, a Wand of Whips will be found in Gorion's Ward's inventory.

The final journal entry varies depending on the outcome:

If all survive:

We are returned to Tethyr, none the worse for wear. Actually, substantially the worse for wear, but I'll settle for having survived.

If someone died (but Neera lives):

We are returned to Tethyr, none the worse for wear. Actually, substantially the worse for wear. The victory came with great cost, though perhaps none have paid more than Neera. She has much to consider now that the Order of Eight Staves is finished.

If Neera died:

I am returned to Tethyr, none the worse for wear. Actually, substantially the worse for wear, but I'll settle for having survived. Sadly, Neera did not.
