The Whirlwind (Elemental prince) spell was introduced as part of the Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal game expansion.
This spell isn't castable by any party member in the game and is provided to the elemental "princes" Chan and Yan-C-Bin only.
Gameplay[]
For a player who casts the High-level class ability spell Elemental Summoning or Greater Elemental Summoning and via a random d100 probability calls forth Chan the 'good' aligned prince/princess of Earth, then while Chan is available the creature can be directed to cast the Whirlwind spell up to twice during the summoning period - Chan won't use it unless ordered to do so by the controlling player.
If the evil aligned Prince of Air, Yan-C-Bin, is encountered in the game, the creature's assigned AI script will probably use this spell early in any battle with the party.
This spell is a near clone of a dragon's Wing Buffet ability, with a few changes made to it.
The spell's projectile is instantly released and affects all enemy creatures of the caster in about a 15-feet radius of the initial selected target.
The spell exposes all enemy creatures in the AoE to several effects, including:
- The creature is pushed/knocked away from the elemental to a maximum distance of 30 feet, and it takes 2-seconds for that distance to be traversed.
- The creature suffers 1d8+12 Crushing damage.
- The creature is made Unconscious for 3 seconds, unless a saving throw versus Spell with a 10-point penalty is achieved.
All the Whirlwind's effects are considered non-magical and thus aren't affected by Magic resistance, and they all have a 0 Power level, so no Spell protections type type defense will prevent it either, with one exception - see Notes section.
A Spell Immunity: Abjuration protected creature will negate this spell.
Notes[]
This spell can be blocked with a Spell Shield as Whirlwind has the secondary type Magic attack type classification (which could be a coding error). Even if the spell does get blocked by the Spell Shield, it won't make cause the shield to fall, as is the usual response to a magical attack, but instead the shield will remain (because Whirlwind has no power level).
