Wanev is an inmate confined in the cellblock portion of the Spellhold Main Floor.

What?! What do you want? Stand up straight! I want that report by dawn! I want this hall cleaned! Don't you stare at me!

History[]

Wanev served as the asylum director of Spellhold for an unknown period of time, until the arrival of Jon Irenicus in 1369 DR. When the fallen elven archmage broke out of his cell, he massacred the Cowled Wizards present at the asylum, intending to take it over for his own purposes. Wanev was one of only two survivors, the other being the caretaker Lonk. However, during the struggle, Wanev's mind was damaged by hostile spell craft, leaving him a raving imbecile. Perhaps amused by this, Irenicus let Wanev live amongst the inmates he had once warded over.

When Gorion's Ward arrived, Wanev eagerly fell in behind the hero, his shattered mind fixating on the notion of avenging what Irenicus had done to him. Unfortunately, Irenicus proved too powerful and Wanev died with his former inmates at his side.

Gameplay[]

The player can interact with Wanev when they first arrive at the Main Floor of Spellhold. If they achieved entry by taking the Wardstone and coming in through the front door, they will be told Wanev's history by the Coordinator. When they talk to Wanev, he simply barks random orders, as if he were still the man in charge of the asylum.

While inside the cellblock, Wanev is prevented from being killed as he is equipped with the MINHP1.ITM. This is for scripted plot purposes. The item is not present when Wanev joins the other inmates to assist the party to battle Irenicus.

Wanev is the most powerful spellcaster provided by the game to help defeat Irenicus in the battle in the basement laboratory.

When hostilities begin, he opens up with a triggered burst of protective buffs including Spell Trap, Stoneskin and Protection From Magical Weapons. After that a True Sight will be attempted.

Wanev has additional spell triggers that can instantly apply further protection during the battle such as Spell Turning, another Stoneskin and Mislead. Note that the script allows some spell use that are not even memorized. This is a common practice in the game's script writing.

Wanev will attempt a Time Stop, and several other higher level attack spells against Irenicus or other hostile creatures. He may lay down a Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, a Finger of Death (wizard) and other destruction.

Special gameplay[]

Through a selected dialogue tree option Wanev will provide a scroll/note (SCRL9A.itm) into the PC's inventory: It reads as follows:

This grubby note is written with something other than ink, but you don't want to think about that too much. It is indecipherable. The author was certainly insane.

Qc terxepssrw evi jypp sj aiewipw. Mrjsvq xli uyiir ws xlex wli qmklx wlss xliq eaec. Livi ai ks 'vsyrh xli qypfivvc fywl. Ks, qsroic, KS!

The dialogue also has a 1 in a thousand percentile chance of providing a different note (SCRLAA.itm), as follows:

Aqw vjkpm K co etcba, dwv vjga ycpv aqw vq vjkpm vjcv. K mpqy ugetgvu. Mggr vjg rcpvcnqqpu. Cnycau mggr vjg rcpvcnqqpu.

Solving the cryptic code is a cipher that is unknown to the party. The magical oracle of wiki omniscience has decoded this message, found on the Wanev's Note page. It's got a separate page in case a reader would like to try the deciphering on their own and not have seen a spoiler.

A clue to see if the reader can solve the cipher: The Qc in the beginning of the message = My. The KS! at the end of the message = GO!.

This is what is defined as a Caesar cipher, also known as Caesar's cipher, the shift cipher, Caesar's code, or Caesar shift, is one of the simplest and most widely known encryption techniques. It is a type of substitution cipher in which each letter in the plaintext is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet. For example, with a left shift of 3, D would be replaced by A, E would become B, and so on. The method is named after Julius Caesar, who used it in his private correspondence.

Mod content[]

The Sword Coast Stratagems mod revises Wanev in terms of his "Smarter Mage" script, as well as a new repertoire of memorized spells. The game difficulty selection may allow the mage to use a High-level class ability. The mod randomizes assigned kits to mages upon install, and for example, this could assign a different kit such as Enchanter or Necromancer.

Wanev has a prepared Minor Sequencer, Spell Sequencer and Spell Trigger scripted for use.

He will open up hostilities with a battery of previously cast buffs to include: Spell Trap, Mirror Image, Shadow Door, Minor Globe of Invulnerability, SI Divination (or Dispelling Screen with the SR mod), Protection From Normal Missiles, Stoneskin, Mindblank with the SR mod, and Non-Detection.

Wanev will use a Time Stop, as well as many other spells. He can try and debuff Irenicus as well with several magic protection removal spell options. Wanev is usually the last inmate standing during the fight, as Irenicus can slay several of the others with his Horrid Wilting use.

Wanev is provided with a potion to quaff if wounded with this mod.
