The Wand of Wonder can be used to generate a random effect which may be beneficial or harmful for the user. This item appears in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. It can be found in the Illithid encampment in the sewers underneath the Athkatla Temple District.
Description[]
“ | Only those with a gambling streak dare use this wand in battle. When triggered it is, at best, unpredictable and, at worst, suicidal. The whimsical mage Malimak created it as a gift for a rival, though more as a prank than with hurtful intent. The recipient's reaction is not known, though Malimak relocated shortly thereafter. It should be used with caution, or not at all. | ” |
Gameplay[]
The wand is found at full capacity and loaded with 50 charges. When all the charges are expended, the wand is destroyed.
To use the wand, place it in the characters quick use item slot in the Inventory. The item use menu will allow a single-target to be selected using the cursor marker.
Once the wand is "triggered" the AI "rolls" a d100 percentile probability to determine what sort of effect is sent the target's way. As follows:
- 0-12 - a standard wizard spell Fireball is launched as a 10th level caster.
- 13-24 - a standard wizard spell Lightning Bolt is launched as a 1st-level caster.
- 25-36 - a Haste effect is applied to the target for 4 rounds.
- 37-48 - a Petrification effect is applied to the target. Non-magical, no saving throw, bypasses Power level spell protections.
- 49-60 - a standard wizard Stinking Cloud spell is launched as a 10th-level caster.
- 61-72 - a standard wizard Web spell is launched as a 10th-level caster.
- 73-86 - a +4 Strength modifier is applied to the target lasting 4 rounds.
- 87-99 - a Stoneskin effect containing six skins is applied to the target, lasting 8 rounds.
Any wand can be recharged by selling and repurchasing it. In the original edition, this particular wand can only be recharged up to 10 charges. Its raw value per charge is also five times higher, 1,000 , further adjusted following the shop price formula.
Bugs[]
- Baldur's Gate I & II Classic
This icon indicates content from all original Baldur's Gate games, extensions included. In the original edition of Baldur's Gate 2, this wand is found with 50 charges as well, but its normal amount of maximum charges is set to 10. Therefore, if the item is sold to a merchant, the additional 40 charges will be permanently lost.
Trivia[]
Baldur's Gate 2 is based on the second edition of Dungeons & Dragons. In the tabletop game only, Wild Mages have partial control over the randomness from magic items. This includes the Deck of Many Things, with which Wild Mages can actively pick which effect they will get 50% of the time, and the Wand of Wonder, through which they are able to cast any spell they know 50% of the time. In Baldur's Gate terms, such a Wand of Wonder would be equivalent to Nahal's Reckless Dweomer as used by a level 14 Wild Mage protected by Improved Chaos Shield.
