Wands of Sleep are used to put creatures with 4 Hit Dice or less to sleep. The effect can be avoided if they make a save vs Wands. This wand has a limited amount of charges and after it runs out of charges it's destroyed. It can be used by all classes provided they have at least 9 intelligence.

Effect[]

The spell only affects hostile creatures in it's target area if they have at most 4 Hit Dice. Creatures that fall asleep will be much easier to hit, are interrupted if they were casting, and can no longer perform any actions. They will not wake up when damaged.

Where to obtain[]

Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast[]

This Wand is carried by the Cult Wizard who steals Soultaker from you, to bring Aec'Letec to the Main Material Plane again.

Throne of Bhaal and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition[]

It can be looted from the first level of Watcher's Keep. It is the only known occurrence of this wand in the 2nd series.

Description[]

This wand will emit a gold beam of energy at its targets up to a maximum range of 60', affecting a 40' cube. If the creature fails their save vs. wands, they will fall into a deep, comatose sleep for 5 turns.

Baldur's Gate I EE[]

This wand will emit a gold beam of energy at its targets up to a maximum range of 60 ft., affecting a 15-ft. radius. If the target creatures fail their Save vs. Wand, they will fall into a deep, comatose sleep for 2 turns.

Baldur's Gate II EE[]

This wand will emit a gold beam of energy at its targets up to a maximum range of 80ft, affecting a 15-ft radius. If the target creatures fail their Save vs. Wands, they will fall into a deep, comatose sleep for 2 turns.

Gameplay[]

  • For the most part, in Baldur's Gate II creatures with 4 HD or less are limited to Sahuagins
  • A wand can take up to 100 charges (though rarely seen). Its value of 7,500gp puts the price per charge at 75gp. This can be used to calculate the number of charges one can expect when buying one from a merchant. Take note to account for Reputation and Charisma based modifications as well as the store markup.

In BG2EE the wand fires a projectile that potentially exposes all 4 Hit Dice creatures or less in the area of effect. The wand is not casting an arcane Sleep spell, but actually implementing a series of effects. The main power is an Unconscious effect, which is also the same as the Sleep (Status Effect). The wand does not bypass Magic resistance. The internal effects of the wand are set at level 1 spell Power level, and thus can be blocked with a Minor Globe of Invulnerability. The wand is configured so that an Elf or Half-elf will get their racial resistance to sleep effects (this includes the drow). It has extremely limited use in BG2, due to the Hit Dice limitation.
