Wand of Cursing is a wand which can be used to make its target Blind, Deaf, and Mute.
It appears in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition.
Description[]
“ | This wand instantly renders the target blind, deaf, and mute. But perhaps the most dangerous aspect of this terrible device is that anyone can use it. | ” |
Aquisition[]
This item can be found on Watcher's Keep's Elemental Level and in the Illithid Encampment or created by the Wish spell.
Gameplay[]
The wand's user places this wand in a "quick item" slot, and then selects a single creature target to aim the wand's projectile toward.
When the projectile reaches the target, it is exposed to the wand's spell effects.
Enemies roll a single Saving throw vs. spells (no bonuses or penalties) against all three effects combined and, if failed, they'll be blinded, deafened and made mute for 1 turn (10 rounds).
If the saving throw is missed, the victim's sprite will render a brief 3D effect and a color glow upon it, as well as three text displays on the combat log reading "Blinded", "Deaf", and "Silence".
This item's effects are actually more powerful than the description suggests, as it not only causes deafness, silence and blindness, it also inflicts a cumulative penalty of 4 points to THAC0.
That means that on the first failed save, the target will get a total penalty of 8 points to THAC0, not 4, as they'll be inflicted by blindness (that worsens both AC and THAC0 by 4) and the separate THAC0 penalty.
Further successful applications will increase the THAC0 penalty by 4; however, the initial THAC0 penalty of 8 is already significant, as it potentially means a reduction of 40% to the enemy's chance to hit your party.
The wand's effects can be potentially blocked by Magic resistance, however as all the internal effects are Power level 0, and have no assigned spell school or secondary type - there is no protection afforded by Spell Immunity or spell protections such as Minor Globe of Invulnerability or Spell Trap.
A target protected by a Mirror Image won't gain any protection against this wand.
The wand's debilitating maladies are subject to removal with a Dispel Magic effect and certain other specific cures.
This item has a maximum of 8 charges when sold and repurchased from vendors.
This is also one of the few items in the game that can be used by literally any class/kit, including Wizard Slayers.
