Baldur's Gate Wiki

The Vocalize spell, by lore, allows a wizard to quietly cast spells with verbal components, by removing those verbal components.

Description[]

Vocalize
The recipient of this spell can cast spells with a verbal component without having to make any noise, so long as the casting takes place entirely within the duration of the vocalize spell. Only the verbal requirement of spells is deleted. This spell has no effect on other noises or speech—it simply removes a spell's verbal component. The recipient is also effectively immune to the effects of Silence, 15' Radius for the duration of the spell. This spell is of great use when quiet is desired in spellcasting.

Gameplay[]

This spell is applied to the caster only.

When the spell is finished casting, a brief lighting and color fade effect plays over the caster's sprite.

A text is displayed reading "Vocalized".

A sound effect is audibled when the spell is cast, and another when the spell's duration expires.

A player character will show an icon (No. 103) titled "Vocalize" on their portrait for the spell's duration.

This spell provides the following benefits:

  • Instantly cures the Silence status effect upon the caster and removes any associated icons from the portrait.
  • Provides protection from the Silence effect, from any source, for the duration of the spell.

The Vocalize spell can be removed by any applicable Dispel Magic effect.

Notes[]

This spell can be cast even while silenced.

As this spell immediately cures the silence effect, the caster is now able to speak and undertake dialogue actions, cry for help, continue using a bard song etc.

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition Wizard spell Vocalize differs in a few ways from the BG video game spell version. Vocalize does not negate a silence spell but merely offsets it for the purpose of spell casting; if a spell caster under the effect of vocalize casts a spell that has some audible effect, that sound will be masked for as long as silence remains in force. Vocalize does not affect normal vocal communication.
