Baldur's Gate Wiki

Vithal is a high-level human Conjurer that can be encountered in the Underdark, but only if a specific action is taken as detailed in the A Mage Imprisoned? questline page.

Ahh! Thank you for releasing me. I was sure my destiny was to end imprisoned here forever. I have never been more glad to be wrong.

— Vithal

Assuming the encounter takes place, another quest can be initiated, which is optional, and that is described in the A Mage's Proposal page.

Vithal is not initially hostile to the party, and until some overt action or certain conditions are triggered in his subsequent questline, will only become hostile then.

Note that this creature can be pick pocketed of certain items from his inventory, though initially there is only a quarterstaff and a random treasure on his person.

Other items will be added to his inventory as he successfully exits each of the Portals (Underdark), allowing the party to attempt to pickpocket the spoils from the other side.

The first Earth Elemental portal adds 5 scrolls to Vithal's inventory which can be taken (Simulacrum, Incendiary Cloud, Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, Wail of the Banshee, and Time Stop).

The second Fire Elemental portal then adds the Rod of Absorption, which while it can be pickpocketed, will be rewarded to the party regardless at the end of this quest.

Lastly, the third Air Elemental portal will place the Skull of Death within Vithal's belongings, which can itself be stolen either before or after claiming your reward from him, though you must be quick as he begins teleporting away upon completion of the quest.

Mods icon This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

The Sword Coast Stratagems Mod makes some changes to this mage. First, the mage specialty kit may be changed an Invoker (or Conjurer, Enchanter or Necromancer - its random), with some different spells memorized, and a new default SCS script is assigned.

Installation of the "Smarter Mages" component, which is reactive to the game difficulty setting will determine if Vithal can use any of the Mage High-level class ability he is assigned, including Comet and Dragon's Breath (spell). Also, contingencies, spell triggers and sequencers are pre-loaded and will be used for near instant deployment of buffs and attacks. Vithal receives 1-point quarterstaff weapon proficiency. SCS adds a Mod only random treasure as well.

The Spell Revisions Mod will make all the memorized spells the SR versions.

The Quest Pack Mod can add a component to Vithal's script and dialogue that can introduce choices as part of the A Mage's Proposal questline.
