Victims of imprisonment is a side quest during Baldur's Gate II Chapter 5 in the Underdark.
It goes hand in hand with Svirfneblin son missing, depending what actions the player does first.
Basically, both of these trapped soul scenarios can overlap and mingle together in the player's journal.
Quest acquisition[]
Victims of imprisonment quest isn't officially presented as a standalone quest but is documented one by one with player Journal entries each time a captured creature is freed from the Soul Entrapment Device or "crystal" as it is referred to in one display.
The Svirfneblin son missing quest is obtained by speaking with the deep gnome Therndle Daglefodd the merchant in the Svirneblin settlement and touching on certain dialogue options will inform the party that Daglefodd's son is missing. He has no idea his whereabouts.
Gameplay[]
Soul entrapment device (or "crystal")[]
The party is likely to come across the drow soul entrapment device before they even visit the Svirfneblin settlement. Each "facet" on the device can be interacted with by using a cursor and activating (or turning" the facet) - there are six facets in total. The cursor displays a text message "Manipulate the facet to release a trapped soul."
From a west to east direction (left to right if facing the device) the following creatures can be liberated from captivity:
Svirneblin son missing[]
- Therndle Daglefodd in the Svirfneblin village in the Underdark will tell you that his son is missing, but no hint about his whereabouts.
Svirfneblin son missingI have spoken with Therndle Daglefodd, a shopkeep in the svirfneblin city. Apparently, his child, Bedlen Daglefodd, has been missing for some days now. It might be worth it to keep an eye open for the boy, though there are no clues as to where he might be.
- Go to the soul entrapment device near the center of the Underdark area and "turn" the second facet from the right to free Bedlen Daglefodd.
- If you're in drow disguise, he will think you're the ones that have imprisoned him initially and when he calms down he'll tell you to come look for this father later on:
- Victims of imprisonment: Bedlen Daglefodd?I located a svirfneblin child that had somehow angered a group of drow and been imprisoned in the crystal that I had found. He has gone back to his village to tell his father of his rescue and has told me to do the same.
- You will get the same entry, with a slightly different dialogue if you're not in Drow disguise and did not talk to his father before.
- If you're not in Drow disguise, but have talked to the father before, he's grateful and will tell you to lookup his father:
- Victims of imprisonment: Svirfneblin sonI located the son of Therndle Daglefodd. He had somehow angered a group of drow and had been imprisoned in the crystal that I had found. He has gone back to his village to tell his father of his rescue.
- Return to Therndle Daglefodd in the village for your reward
Reward[]
Threndle is appreciative of the party's efforts to assist him in freeing his son. He provides a pair of Bracers of Defense AC 4 and 10,000 XP (shared by the party).
Drow disguise reaction[]
It is easiest to do this quest as soon as you enter the underdark and not be in drow disguise. However, when under drow disguise at any point you must have a reaction of 15 or higher to resolve any conflicts in your story or come back later:
- When you rescue Bedlen as a drow:
- If you talk to him as a drow:
- Victims of imprisonment: Svirfneblin sonI went to Therndle Daglefodd to tell him of how I rescued his child, and he was quite amazed. I was still under the drow-form illusion, and he was astounded that drow would come to his aid. He was most generous with his reward.
- If you talk to him as yourself:
- If your reaction is too low (you can come back at a later time):
- If you talk to him as yourself:
- Victims of imprisonment: Svirfneblin sonI went to Therndle Daglefodd to tell him of how I rescued his child, but he would not believe me! I had forgotten that I was under the drow-form illusion when I rescued the boy. Now, with my normal face, Therndle does not believe me. He might have trusted me if he had thought more of me, but I fear he had a poor reaction to my story.
- If your reaction is 15 or higher:
- Victims of imprisonment: Svirfneblin sonI went to Therndle Daglefodd to tell him of how I rescued his child, and he almost didn't believe me. I forgot that I was under the drow-form illusion when I rescued the boy. Now, with my normal face, I proved quite puzzling. Fortunately, Therndle reacted well, and he believed me in the end.
- When you rescue Bedlen as yourself:
- If you talk to him as a Drow (reaction doesn't matter):
- Victims of imprisonment: Svirfneblin sonI went to Therndle Daglefodd to tell him of how I rescued his child, but he would not believe me! I had forgotten that I was not under the drow-form illusion when I rescued the boy. Now, with a drow face, Therndle does not trust me. Perhaps I can return when I am no longer under the effects of the spell.
- If you talk to him as yourself:
- Victims of imprisonment: Svirfneblin sonI went to Therndle Daglefodd to tell him of how I rescued his child, and he was surprised that surfacers would come to his aid. He was most generous with his reward.
