I left all this noise and crowds for very good reasons. And I'm beginning to remember them.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn & Throne of Bhaal[edit | edit source]

Recruitment[edit | edit source]

Valygar is available to recruit from Chapter 2. He can be found in his cabin in the Umar Hills after the side quest The hunt for Valygar Corthala is initiated. He will return to his cabin when removed from the party.

Quests[edit | edit source]

Relationships[edit | edit source]

  • Edwin - Conflicts
  • Viconia - She will come to blows with Valygar if a certain noblewoman in the Government District is spoken to while they are both in the party
  • Mazzy sees Valygar as a new squire in her dialogues with him

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

When he joins the party, he has the following items: his family blade and armor, a long bow and some arrows.

Valygar is one of the only companions (others being Dorn and Minsc) that can use Defender of Easthaven, Armor of Faith, and Hardiness, reducing physical damage significantly. He cannot, however, use flails for backstabbing, which makes this a questionable choice, especially if using 3E sneak attack rules.

On the other hand, he can be equipped with a quarter staff (Staff of the Ram by preference) on a second weapon quickslot. He can then start battles hidden, and after an initial backstab, switch to his main weapon/Defender of Easthaven combo.

Biography[edit | edit source]

When asked about his past, VALYGAR is silent for a long time and his face becomes grim. He explains briefly that he is the last of the Corthala noble line, a family that was once one of the wealthiest in Amn. The Corthalas have always been cursed with magical ability, however, and Valygar spits the words with great derision. Every Corthala who has used their magical talents has become obsessed with them and ultimately come to a grievous end. His mother was the most recent victim, although the ranger does not elaborate on the point. Valygar intends to fulfill his family's oath to find and destroy their ancestor, Lavok, and then he intends to let his cursed bloodline die out once and for all.

Personality[edit | edit source]

  • Valygar really, really, really, really, really hates mages.
  • If he is traveling with Neera, several times he will question her about the risks, dangers and irresponsibility of using her wild magic and wild surges.
  • He is the only one who can stop Jan's nonsense stories.
