A Ulitharid is a noble of Illithid society and is treated as a minor demi-god being by their lesser Mind Flayer brethren.

Ulitharids are also extremely rare within mind flayer enclaves; less than one in a hundred illithid tadpoles would develop into an ulitharid. Their rarity supports the reverence they receive from other illithids, who view them as a blessing and second only to the The Master Brain. Their ego reflects their privileged position, as they view the common mind flayer as a lesser being.

The game plays fast and loose with the supposedly rarity factor of this creature. For example, in the Mind Flayers in Underdark area there are at least five of them.

Locations[]

Ulitharids typically inhabit mind flayer lairs in various dungeons. They are usually accompanied by regular mind flayers and umber hulks. They carry no gold nor any treasure, however the Ulitharid encountered in Spellhold Bodhi's Hunt Level 3 will drop the Flame of the North when defeated. The game will award different experience point values for different varieties of the Ulitharids encountered. The XP noted in the info box is for the fully implemented and common form.

Gameplay[]

Ulitharids are an effectively more powerful version of the ordinary mind flayer. Ulitharids are able to force cast Cure Serious Wounds upon themselves when their Hit point level is reduced to 50 percent of their maximum HP. Ulitharids also have better stats – greater Hit point value, better THAC0 and Armor Class. In addition are fifty percent resistant to Missile damage. Their movement rate is slightly faster than the ordinary illithid. These creatures are highly resistant to magic.

A ulitharid also attacks with a 5 Attacks per round round (the ordinary Mind Flayer has 4).

When an enemy is detected with current hit points at 25% of maximum, a Maze spell will be attempted at that enemy.

The first Psionic Ability normally attempted is a Psionic Domination power, at the closest enemy detected. After that the Psionic Blast ability is launched at targets, about every two rounds. If an enemy is in melee range, the ulitharid may attempt to strike with the devour brain melee attack, which temporarily drains 5 points of intelligence per successful hit.

As ulitharids have no class kit assigned, they receive due to a bug the saving throw bonuses of a specialist mage who would be trained in no specific school: they save with a bonus of -2 against school-less abilities and add a penalty of +2 for recipients of their own such attacks.[1] This applies to their Psionic Blast and Psionic Domination.

The Sword Coast Stratagems improves illithids of all varieties. The Ulithatid is no exception and SCS raises their Hit Dice to level 14. A reworked AI script is also designed to improve the decision logic of the creature, and to recognize opponent's vulnerabilities and protections to act in a smarter tactical manner. For example, it knows if a player is under effects of Chaotic Commands or Enrage. It can detect the Helm of Charm Protection or the Shield of Harmony. It makes different targeting or attack option decisions with this information.

If any kind of Skeleton Warrior are detected, they will be attacked with the Detonate ability, which destroys the creature in SCS.

The Ulitharid will quaff potions or apply oils to heal or boost abilities (the same as a party member). They carry three or more different potions (random SCS selection).such Potion of Invulnerability or Potion of Freedom.

The creature is scripted to use the following innate psionic abilities: Planar Travel (SPIN179), Improved Invisibility (SPIN544), Psionic Maze, Ballistic Attack, Detonate, Cure Serious Wounds (SPIN958), Psionic Blast (SPIN959), and Psionic Domination.

Note that the Ulitharid uses the more potent Psionic Blast version, with a -4 saving throw penalty.

The Ulitharid's devour brain melee attack has a range of 3 in SCS.

SCS Ulitharids often begin the battle under Improved Invisibility. These crafty creatures will use the Planar Travel ability to dimension door to parts of the area map, including adjacent to vulnerable characters, or party members in the rear or even in another room from the main battle.
