AR1000BG1worldmap Ulgoth's Beard is one of the areas from the World Map.

Ulgoth's Beard is an area added by the expansion pack Tales of the Sword Coast and many quests added by the expansion can be started here.

Description[]

The village of Ulgoth's Beard lies on the banks of the River Chionthar, just upstream from Baldur's Gate and the open sea beyond. This farm-dotted countryside is usually a peaceful haven from the turmoil of the Sword Coast, although of late the same cannot be said of Ulgoth's Beard itself. The simple fishing village has become the source of many a rumor in recent days. Rumors of an ancient cult risen again, unsubstantiated tales of a murderous creature stalking the night, and talk of strange goings-on in the house of Shandalar, the powerful and eccentric mage who makes his home in the normally sleepy village. You have also heard with certainty that tours of the fabled Durlag's Tower operate from Ulgoth's Beard, and that it is truly a place where adventurers can test their mettle. Perhaps such a test will better prepare you to fight the darkness that threatens to destroy the Sword Coast and you with it.

Getting There[]

Ulgoth's Beard appears on the world map northeast corner anytime Tales of the Sword Coast or the Enhanced Edition is installed, including during the Candlekeep Prologue.

Ulgoth's Beard becomes an attainable destination when you reach Wyrm's Crossing.

Quests[]

  • Therella's Missing Son - In one of the houses, you can find Therella, a mother whose son Dalton went to explore Durlag's Tower, but didn't return. She wants you to find her son and bring him home alive, or else return with his corpse.

Other People[]

The Bartender in the inn is selling basic weapons and armor as well as a decent assortment of magical items, some of which are found nowhere else in the game.

Baresh will confront Gorion's Ward and party upon their return from the Isle of Balduran.

Calahan is a fisherman in Ulgoth's Beard who will approach you after you talk to Mendas. For 20 gp he will give you hints that Mendas may be a bit shady.

Cult Enforcers will confront Gorion's Ward and party upon their return to Ulgoth's Beard while carrying the Soultaker Dagger.

Delsvirftanyon, slightly south of center on the area map, announces that he is having a "going out of business" sale of his Durlag's Tower adventuring supplies business, and offers to sell you his remaining stock for 500gp. Sounds like a scam, but it's (mostly) not. You get Dwarven Rune Wardstone and Leather Armor +1, as well as a Wardstone Forgery, Short Sword, Gold Ring, Silver Ring, Onyx Ring, and Silver Necklace. This shows up in your journal as a finished quest.

Dushai, an old gnome who may offer to tell the party the story of Balduran if they expressed interest in the pursuit of knowledge while talking to Mendas.

Fenrus Boulon, a nobleman by the docks in the southwest, will give you a lecture on the history of Durlag's Tower. This shows up in your journal contributing to the Durlag's Tower quest.

Galken, a mage located in the inn, wants you to clear up his 900 gp tab with the innkeeper in return for a Dwarven Rune Wardstone that supposedly gives entry to the dungeons beneath Durlag's Tower. This shows up in your journal as a finished quest.

Buildings[]

There are also two locked homes on either side of the entrance to town.

Notes[]

  • The party is allowed to camp anywhere in Ulgoth's Beard without interruption, something usually forbidden in civilized areas.
