Thrix is a devil in service to Belhifet. He is encountered on the Avernus Bridge, before the gates of the Basalt Tower into which the pursued Caelar Argent has just disappeared into. Ordered to delay Gorion's Ward until Belhifet finishes with Caelar's group. Thrix attempts to stall the party through either combat or a wager.
Involvement[]
| “ | You have come far, <CHARNAME>. But Thrix the Profane's master would have you go no further... for now. | ” |
Thrix greets Gorion's Ward thus and summons a group of devils to either test the party. If Thrix himself is not harmed during this initial fight, he will propose an alternative to further bloodshed: a wager.
Thrix's Wager[]
| “ | You are in the first and greatest of the Hells, little thing. Nothing here comes free. But perhaps you might be interested in a wager? | ” |
Thrix offers one of three artifacts, the Echo of the Fiend, the Tongue of Acid, or The Guardian Devil—if Gorion's Ward can answer his riddle. If the answer is wrong, Thrix claims a soul as payment, which may be the protagonist’s or that of a companion.
This choice carries weight at the later sham trial in Baldur's Gate:
- Wagering a companion's soul is judged villainous.
- Risking one's own soul is judged heroic.
The riddle posed by Thrix is:
| “ | A useful tool, though most despise it. In light, it can topple kingdoms; in shadows, it sustains nations. What is it? |
” |
If Gorion's Ward answers correctly, Thrix grants the chosen item and steps aside, remarking that his master should now be finished with Caelar. If the answer is wrong, Thrix does not immediately collect his prize but promises to return for the soul at a later date.
If Gorion's Ward gambled away their own soul, the journal updates:
Thrix's Wager
A devil has laid claim to my soul.
I took a chance to gain entry to the basalt tower, wagering my soul in a bet with the devil Thrix the Profane. I lost, but Thrix has not taken my soul. He claims he will find me one day to claim his prize. Perhaps then I can beat the devil at his own game.
Success produces this journal update:
Thrix's Wager
I've won a wager against a devil.
I took a chance to gain entry to the basalt tower, wagering my life in a bet with the devil Thrix the Profane. I was victorious, thankfully, and now Caelar seems within my grasp.
Either way, the journal also reports:
The Siege of Dragonspear
I must enter the basalt tower to find Caelar.
The way to the basalt tower is clear. Within, I must find Caelar and deal with her.
Violence[]
Thrix can also be fought instead of bargained with.
- If attacked during the opening fight, he calls for reinforcements and joins the battle.
- If left unharmed but his wager is refused, he summons more devils and withdraws. The journal reports:
Thrix's Fury
I've angered a devil.
A powerful devil, Thrix the Profane, sought to bar my way. When I challenged him, he fled, leaving a handful of minions to battle for him. The fiend's lackeys fell before me, but the devil promised retribution. I will deal with him should he seek to fulfill his promise. For now, I've more pressing matters to deal with.
In this case, he should reappear later during the battle with Belhifet.
