The hunt for Valygar Corthala is a companion quest in Shadows of Amn campaign.

Prologue[]

Just outside of the Council of Six Building is Madeen who wants you to go inside and talk to his master about working for the Cowled Wizards.

Inside, Tolgerias states that several Cowled Wizards members were killed, and he wants you to bring the murderer in for some unknown purpose. The target of your manhunt is Valygar Corthala, and you can find his home to the left of Temple of Oghma in the Docks district of the city.

Find Valygar[]

Valygar's manservant Hervo has some info if you pretend to be a friend or at least just a neutral visitor worried about his wellbeing, or you may just search upstairs for Corthala Tax Notice document - which gives you another clue revealing the man's property is in the Umar Hills area.

If you go to the Council of Six Building in the Government district and talk to Llarsh and show him the Corthala Tax Notice (and pay a 100 gp fee/bribe) he will tell you that Valygar's cabin is in the Umar Hills area, and that Valygar is related to Lavok Corthala, a 500-year-old necromancer who has something to do with the The Planar Sphere in the Slums (you do not need to talk to Llarsh - you can go straight to the Umar Hills).

Valygar's Cabin is located northwest of the Umar Hills maps, there are three Rangers at the top of the natural stone stairway leading to the outskirts of his cabin, the elven one is named Derrick and the leader. Depending on dialogue choices you can either brush off their questions (which will send them hostile) or tell them that you aren't here to hurt their master if you're not looking for a fight.

In his cabin, Valygar tells you that he killed the Cowled Wizards out of self-defense because they needed him, dead or alive, to access the The Planar Sphere, which was created by his ancestor, a Necromancer named Lavok. Valygar would like to eliminate him, with your help.

At this point you have several options:

  • Let Valygar join your party (for 9500 XP) and, whenever it is convenient, go to the Slums in Athkatla and enter the Planar Sphere with him. If Tolgerias is slain Inside the Planar Sphere later a journal entry will be provided that states:
The hunt for Valygar Corthala: We have been assaulted by Tolgerias, the Cowled Wizard who was hunting Valygar in an obvious attempt to gain access to the planar sphere. The wizard is dead now... although further repercussions from the Cowled Wizards seem likely.
  • Tell him to "proceed as he will"; he will go to his home in the Docks. Now, whenever it is convenient, go to the Docks, add him to the party, go to the Slums, and enter the Planar Sphere.
  • Kill Valygar and take his body (note: he must not be in the party when you kill him for his body to appear). When you deliver the body to Tolgerias you can simply hand it over, which gets you 11,500 XP, and 500 gold, but no information about Imoen. Worst of all, it will permanently lock you out of the Planar Sphere. Alternatively, you can demand a greater reward from Tolgerias, which will cause him to Dimension Door away, and the body remains in your possession. You can use Valygar's dead body in order to gain access to the Sphere (if you haven't handed it to Tolgerias).

Gameplay[]

Taking Valygar into your party may trigger an encounter with bounty hunters, including Suna Seni. Suna has previous ties to Valygar, as they were previously romantically involved.

Getting three Rings of the Ram: Pickpocketing Tolgerias for the first; kill Valygar and stuff him in a Bag of Holding (if you have one - if you don't then this cheesy exploit won't work), report to Tolgerias and claim the second as reward; with the body not disappearing from the bag, open Planar Sphere, finish the sphere story line for number 3. [verification needed]

Does not work in the Enhanced Edition anymore, as this was an unintended exploit, and is fixed.
