The Root of the Problem, also known as Club +1, +3 vs. unnatural creatures, is an enchanted and magical club in Siege of Dragonspear, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, and The Black Pits II: Gladiators of Thay.

It was cut from Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast, where it can only be obtained via console command and is a magical, but not enchanted club.

Description[]

This enchanted club is said to have existed since the time of the fall of Netheril and the birth of the great Anauroch Desert. While the toll on civilization was great, the true victims of this age were nature's creatures, condemned to stand and watch as their homes decayed and died. As habitats receded, those that remained were invaded by displaced hordes of creatures, the more impatient of which marched on unspoiled land taking whatever they wished. This particular weapon is said to have come from a dryad's tree, a final gift to nature's cause from a woodland spirit that could not hold back the invaders of her land. Hers was a bittersweet pain, as her wood might not have suffered so if it had not been so strong and lush. Less respecting scholars have since bestowed the item's ironic name, though the humor is not appreciated among nature's more devout followers.

Gameplay[]

The combat properties of this weapon vary by game and edition of the Baldur's Gate series.

  • Its Strength requirement is 3 in the first part of the series, and 5 in the second part.
  • Regarding weapon proficiencies, "Blunt Weapons" would be required in Tales of the Sword Coast, and "Club" in the Enhanced Editions. In the original Shadows of Amn, to-hit penalties may apply, as the required proficiency is given as "EXTRAPROFICIENCY1" – a proficiency that cannot be acquired by any party character. [verification needed]
  • Besides the base crushing damage of 1d6, a bonus of 1 applies to THAC0 and damage against every opponent, with an additional bonus of 2 (in total 3) against giant humanoids, monsters and undead. Except for the version in the game files of the Tales of the Sword Coast, 1 point of acid damage is added against every opponent.
  • The weapon's enchantment level would be 0, i.e. non-enchanted, in Tales of the Sword Coast, 3 versus every opponent in the original Shadows of Amn, and only in the Enhanced Editions 1 versus most enemies, but 3 versus the especially targeted creature types.

Mod content[]

Mods icon This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

The mod Unfinished Business for BG1 adds the Club +1, +3 vs. unnatural creatures to the inventory of Amarande in the original Tales of the Sword Coast, and to that of Corsone in the Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, thus making it also potentially available as import in the original Shadows of Amn. The weapon's combat statistics (see above) depend on the edition of the game, the mod is installed upon.
