The Horn of Kazgaroth is unlike The Claw of Kazgaroth, in that it is not a cursed item and it bestows its effects upon the user only when it's activated. Also, it occupies a different slot — so the two of them can be used simultaneously. This horn can be used as long as the wearer has enough HP. When activated, the Horn of Kazgaroth inflicts 10 crushing damage to the user in order to bestow the following effects for 3 rounds (18 seconds):

  • Immunity to all level 1 & 2 spells;
  • +2 bonus to all saving throws;
  • Armor class bonus of +5 against missile attacks.

This horn can't be used by clerics or druids – and all the class combinations having one of these – and thieves. It is sold by Thalantyr the Conjurer at High Hedge. The Horn has 15 charges when purchased. This item appears in Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, but also in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition for imported characters who have this item and if the player does not have The Claw of Kazgaroth and the Helm of Balduran.

Description[]

This horn is thought to be made of one of the tusks of the great beast Kazgaroth. Who imbued it with its enchantment is unknown, but it is a very potent item. When blown upon, no sounds issues from the horn. Instead the user of the horn is encased in a globe of power for a short duration. The bubble gives the user partial magical resistance and a saving throw bonus, as well as partially deflecting incoming missiles attacks. The effect only lasts 18 seconds, and the horn draws from the life force of the user everytime it is used.

Gameplay[]

  • The Horn of Kazgaroth is an amulet in the original games. However, it has been changed in a quick slot item in the Enhanced Editions.
  • The crushing self-damage caused by this item can be blocked by images created by Reflected Image or Mirror Image (though there's still a chance for it to hit the user, just like what happens when someone attacks a Mage using those spells, unless they are under the effect of positive luck) and can be resisted by any form of crushing damage resistance, such as a Dwarven Defender's natural resistance (if it's high enough to prevent at least 1 damage) or the resistance provided by their Defensive Stance ability.
