The Enemies of My Friend is Rasaad's companion quest in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition.
Rasaad's Tale[]
Have Rasaad join the party and after 24 hrs have passed he'll begin the first of two two-part banters with Gorion's Ward. You can choose to engage him in dialogue or not. Now seven days must pass before he'll attempt the next two-part banter. Again you can talk with him or brush him off. After this 48 more hrs must pass and then have the party head for South Baldur's Gate.
Dialogue[]
The first set of dialogues provides insight into Rasaad's path to becoming a Sun Soul monk and his purpose for coming to Nashkel, which introduces the name of Alorgoth to the story.
You appear troubled. Does a shadow lie upon your soul, <Gorion's Ward>?
- 1-I want to know more about you. How did you become a Sun Soul monk?
- "It seems so long ago that I first joined the order. Thinking of those days revives fond memories, even as it reminds me of those precious things I have lost. My mother gave up her own life to give life to me. Without her help, my father struggled to raise me and my older brother, Gamaz. Life in Calimport is hard for those not born to wealth and privilege. When he could no longer pay his rising debts, my father was condemned to the Arena Efreetum, where he fought and died for the entertainment of the people. His death left Gamaz and me to scratch out a life upon the streets. We helped each other as best we could, begging, serving, and yes… sometimes stealing. One day, Gamaz was caught with his hand upon the purse of a Sun Soul monk. Rather than punish us, the monk brought us to the monastery, where we were bathed, fed, and clothed as initiates. From that day forward, we learned the mysteries of Selune and trained out bodies, minds, and spirits to spread her light to others."
- 2-Why did you come to Nashkel in the first place?
- “While divided by distance and allegiance to three different gods, the various sects of the Order of the Sun Soul cooperate across Faerun. When the sect in Athkatla ceased responding to messages, my masters in Calimport sent ten monks to investigate. Gamaz and I were among those chosen to set sail for Amn. We found the monastery abandoned. The nearby residents we questioned about the mystery changed the subject or fled. For weeks, we continued to investigate. At last, through stealth, subterfuge, and patience, we began to overhear rumors that agents of Shar, the Mistress of the Night had murdered all the Sun Soul monks in Athkatla. The local residents feared Shar too much to speak with us. But again and again, we overheard one named uttered in fearful whispers: Alorgoth.”
The second set of dialogues provides insight into Rasaad's search for the "missing Sun Soul monks" which really provides the background to his brother Gamaz's supposed death at the hands of the Shadow Thieves. The second dialogue gives some background to Rasaad's upbringing with the Sun Soul monks and provides the initial insight as to what helped to drive Gamaz into the teachings of the Dark Moon monks.
Do you seek enlightenment?
- 1-I'd like to know more about your search for the missing Sun Soul monks.
- 2-Tell me more about your training with the Sun Soul monks.
Rasaad's quest will then advance once you enter South Baldur's Gate with him at least two days later. No matter when you visit the docks (including during daylight hrs), a cut-scene will begin and the time is set to the next midnight. This could prove fatal in some time limited quests, like Eldoth's quest.
South Baldur's Gate[]
Upon entering the area, the time will be advanced to midnight and the party will be confronted by a trio of Dark Moon monks near the docks. Rasaad will identify them as some of the people who attacked him and his brother Gamaz in Athkatla, and a fight ensues. Viconia (if in party) will taunt Rasaad after the fight but Rasaad will insist that the party meet Sorrem in the Blade and Stars tavern to find more clues. Just remember to pick up a Dark Moon Note before you leave the scene.
Sorrem is found on the second floor of the tavern. He'll try to lure you into a trap if you choose to follow him into the Dark Moon's safe house near the Seven Suns building in Southwest Baldur's Gate or you can directly kill the thug. Either way be sure to get his note which, when added to your inventory, reveals the location of the Cloud Peaks mountain range where the Dark Moon Temple is located.
Cloud Peaks[]
Travel to the Nashkel Mines, the Gibberling Mountains, or the Valley of the Tombs and exit via the eastern (NM) or southern (GM/VT) edge of the areas to obtain access to the Cloud Peaks area. Once you arrive and begin to explore the area, the party will first witness a group of Dark Moon Applicants being berated and attacked by some Dark Moon monks. You can choose to intervene in the ensuing fight to save them for a reward of Oil of Fiery Burning or watch as the monks slaughter them and then turn and attack the party. If you save at least one and kill all the monks it is also possible to extort an extra 500
out of them besides receiving the potion or ask them to join your attack of the Dark Moon shrine.
The area is also populated by several Snow Trolls and either spawning Wolves or Winter Wolves. A wide, multi-tiered corridor begins near the center bottom of the area and snakes up the eastern side to the entrance of the temple. Four more monks are found near the beginning of the corridor and then two more three tiers up followed by a second pair near the top.
Once you have worked your way up to the entrance to the temple, you'll discover that Gamaz, who's been turned by Alorgoth to the worship of Shar, is still alive and it becomes obvious that the two brothers aren't going to be friends anymore. Following a back and forth dialogue between the two, with occasional interjections by Gorion's Ward, Gamaz will command the six Dark Moon Initiates who are standing in front of him to attack the party while he darts inside the temple.
Dark Moon Temple[]
The temple is occupied by Dark Moon monks and initiates. Beware of traps--they are present on both the ground and on a few chests. Continue north through the interior of the temple to find Gamaz near the rear of the temple surrounded by a smattering of monks and initiates. Another dialogue session takes place (before Gamaz runs off again) where Rasaad admits how he held back during their training, but ultimately he cannot convince Gamaz to turn back. Be wary of the fireball trap near the exit during the fight. Grab the Big-Fisted Belt in the locked (Disarm: 40) chest (2200.450) and continue on.
Dark Moon Temple Cave[]
Transition from the temple into the Dark Moon Temple Cave. If in party, Branwen will talk about the cave's cages being used by Tempus's clerics to hold animals and monsters for combat training. In a side chamber you'll meet a pair of caged men named Jasper Banff and Bassano. Their riddle is classical, the honest solution (besides saving/loading) is to ask one of them "Which cage will the other prisoner tell me is safe to open?" then open the cage opposite to the answer received. Bassano turns out to be a Dark Moon monk spy and after going invisible, he will be waiting in the shadows to backstab you near the cages where the Black Bears were located (1596.1906).
Now travel east for the opening to the summit for the final showdown.
Dark Moon Temple Summit[]
Near the Shar statue (they sure are capable of replacing a giant statue fast) the party catches up with Gamaz one last time and a fight is inevitable. Gamaz will fall down when enough damage is dealt, but he won't initiate his final words before his minions are also taken care of. Rasaad's grief is grave but we'll have to loot Gamaz for Glimmering Bands and 1,000
.
Trivia[]
- Like other BGEE companion quests, Rasaad will show up from nowhere to join the cut-scenes if he's not in party at the time when the scene plays.
Bugs[]
- When entering the South Baldur's Gate, even after the two background dialogues from Rasaad, the quest cutscene may not trigger. To fix this bug, it is required to edit some of Rasaad's local variables in the game: set "RASAAD_CDEV" to 1 and "RASAAD_CDEV2_END" to 0 (this can be done using the console and targeting Rasaad, or with a save editor). You must then do the dialogues another time, wait 48 hours, and re-enter South Baldur's Gate.
