The Burning Earth (The Burning Earth +1 in-game), also known by the name of Flame Tongue, is both a silver and cold iron long sword that has advantages against specific enemy types.

It's possible to import this item from the Tales of the Sword Coast into the Siege of Dragonspear expansion and into Shadows of Amn.[1]

Description

There was a time before Neverwinter was warm and before the great Anauroch was dry... or so it is said. Few relics remain to prove such an age existed, and fewer still have an identifiable purpose. "The Burning Earth" seems straightforward enough. It burns a victim with magical fire, and a cryptic rune seems to suggest that the power comes from the ground itself—but whomever constructed it remains a mystery. It looks a perfectly serviceable weapon, but something in the balance or grip is... wrong. It strains the forearm a touch, and does not fit the hand just right. It doesn't seem to hurt a warrior's performance, aside from the nagging doubt that the blade was not made for them... or any other humanoid.

Gameplay[]

This sword inflicts Slashing damage and one point of Fire damage in the Enhanced Edition.

Additional THAC0 bonuses and damage bonuses are applied when striking specific creature types, as shown on the InfoBox.

In case it isn't clear, the usual enchantment level of this sword is +1 in terms of what it can hit. However, when the blade is directed at one of the four identified creature race or class identifiers (it uses either one depending on the creature) then the enchantment level changes to the one assigned to the race or class. For example, when striking an Undead creature the weapon is considered +4 enchantment. When striking a lycanthrope it strikes as a +2 enchanted item.

Hexxat refuses to equip this weapon.

Possible equipment when importing a character.[1]

Dropped by[]

  • Dalok, a druid who will attack the party at the Druid Grove; he has a different weapon equipped, though. The item won't be dropped if it was already included as part of the Importing items into Shadows of Amn. There can be only one "Burning Earth".

Unused references[]

  • The Durlag's Tower area from the first game is still a part of the second game's files, though renamed to AR0065.are, but not implemented into and not displayable by the game.

Notes[]

  • There's also a weapon called the Sword of Flame with a different strength requirement and no mention of additional augments to any creature races.

Trivia[]

  • Like the Moonblade, this blade is also on fire when unsheathed, but this one has naturally colored flames.
  • Despite its description and animation, in the original games it does not deal out fire damage.
