Baldur's Gate Wiki

The Answerer is a Long Sword obtainable only during Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal portion of the game.

Description

The Answerer

The last swing of a battle is more important than the first. Such is the philosophy embodied in this powerful weapon. Although the strange design of the Answerer makes it difficult to take the initiative in combat, with each hit it makes an opponent more vulnerable to subsequent attacks.

Gameplay[]

This sword is a +4 Enchanted item that inflicts 1d8+4 Slashing damage, provides a 4-point THAC0 bonus, a reach range of 1 foot, and a has a Speed Factor of 9.

The weapon speed factor is purposely configured to be very slow, allowing the opponent to go first, so as to allow the wielder to "answer" the opponent with the blade's unique powers.

Any successful hit on a foe will expose the target to the following:

  • Magic resistance reduced by 15% for 4-rounds (bypass MR, no save).
  • General Armor Class rating reduced by 2-points for 4-rounds (bypass MR, no save).

A player character hit by this weapon will show an icon (No.106) reading "Magic Resistance Lowered" on their portrait for the 4-round duration.

Multiple strikes with the sword will additively accumulate the effects, each instance has its own 4-round timer, and it cannot be removed from the victim - the duration must run its course.

There is no defense against the on-hit effects of this blade, other than immunity to the weapon's enchantment, or to magical weapons in general, or to basically not get hit in the first place.

Acquisition[]

General Jamis Tombelthen wields this weapon in his off-hand - if slain, the sword can be recovered.

Notes[]

The sword is flagged as "silver" and "cold iron" as such is able to hit the stronger Werewolves, however this is not useful or required post Baldur's Gate I game edition.
