The longer the fight, the sweeter your blood when I kill you!

Tazok is an evil Ogre, found in service to several powerful characters throughout the entire Baldur's Gate series. Even if killed, he will face Gorion's Ward multiple times, showing no signs of or weaknesses caused by a former death.

I fell with Sarevok, but not again!

Baldur's Gate[]

I think you make pretty good bandits.

Tazok is in charge of the operations at the Bandit Camp which is populated by members of the mercenary groups the Blacktalons and the Chill. He is receiving his orders from Davaeorn and commands Mulahey, who is in charge of the operations in the Nashkel Mines.

Tazok will be encountered in the Bandit Camp only if the party successfully infiltrates it. In the original Baldur's Gate, it was possible, though difficult, to kill Tazok and take his Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise. The Enhanced Edition made Tazok immune to death that early in the game. Regardless, Tazok will be encountered in the Temple of Bhaal at the end of the game whether he died or not.

I'm a member of the Blacktalons. All I know is that we've been hired by the Zhentarim to attack the iron shipments coming along the Coast Way road.

Tazok's stats in the Bandit Camp are different from those when he's encountered in the Temple of Bhaal. The infobox mostly lists those later ones; divergences follow:

The original game's expansion Tales of the Sword Coast improves Tazok's combat behavior, which is carried over into the Enhanced Edition: he now is able to shout for help or assist allies if they were shouting.[1]

Oh sure! Touch me like you know me! Now I kill you twice!

Shadows of Amn[]

During Shadows of Amn, Tazok is found in Firkraag's Maze which is located in the Windspear Hills. He will recognize Gorion's Ward, initiate a short exchange and promptly attack. Upon death Tazok drops a mysterious key.

Ahh, you did come! He said you would, but I thought you too much a coward. My swaddling kin will have your flesh after all!

Mod content[]

Installation of the Sword Coast Stratagems mod makes some revisions to Tazok in SoA. He is now a level 19 Berserker. His quick items include two Potion of Extra Healing which he can quaff when wounded to a specific damage threshold, and an Oil of Speed will be applied near the start of battle. Tazok will muster his Enrage ability at the outset of hostilities.

The mod provided a helmet to protect against critical hits, and Tazok now has 5 pips in two-handed sword weapon proficiency, as well as 2 pips in two-handed fighting style. This will improve his THAC0, weapon damage, speed factor, and critical hit chances. With the enrage ability, this will improve even more, plus protection from many status effects. With the Oil of Speed applied he may get as many as 4 attacks per round.

Tazok will be wielding the Dragon Blade if the Siege of Dragonspear Importing criteria is met - and if so, will gain the benefits of that weapon in combat.

Throne of Bhaal[]

Tazok does not appear in the Throne of Bhaal, but he is referenced to by a script[2] that handles the Pocket Plane challenges, in his case specifically the second one, Possibilities. However, only his death is checked, and in the Enhanced Edition the related name comment is given as Tamoko. The latter appears in a cutscene during this challenge. Maybe Tazok was originally planned to have a third appearance.  [verification needed]

With the installation of the Sword Coast Stratagems, with or without the Ascension mod, Tamoko does not appear and is replaced by Tazok during the second pocket plane challenge. The mod makes some revisions to Tazok as he is now a level 23 Berserker. His quick items include two Potion of Superior Healing which he can quaff when wounded to a specific damage threshold, He may use a charge from the Cloak of the Shield applied near the start of battle. Tazok will muster his Enrage ability at the outset of hostilities.

The mod will label the creature as "Tazok" on the battle map. After the Enrage ability is mustered, Tazok will also launch Critical Strike as well as three uses of Power Attack. Otherwise, this mod version is the same as the vanilla game.

Bugs[]

  • Baldur's Gate GTRBPSK Icon BG1Baldur's Gate (1998)
This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate campaign.
Although several times referred to as half-ogre in the original Baldur's Gate and also coming with the stature of one, Tazok is technically an ogre. Though his appearance remains untouched, at least the references are changed to "ogre" in the Enhanced Editions of both games of the series.
  • Shadows of Amn LOADCNTR00004 Icon SoABaldur's Gate II:
    Shadows of Amn
    (2000)
This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign.
The original Shadows of Amn mixes this even more up: Tazok now appears as and technically is an orog – a subrace of the orcs. This is changed back to Baldur's Gate I stats in the Enhanced Edition.
  • Shadows of Amn LOADCNTR00004 Icon SoABaldur's Gate II:
    Shadows of Amn
    (2000)
This icon indicates content from the original Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign.
Additionally, his alignment shifts from neutral to chaotic evil. This again is reverted by the Enhanced Edition.
  • The latter two bugs are still present in both editions of Tazok's – cut from the game – appearance in Throne of Bhaal.
