Baldur's Gate Wiki

The Tanner's Letter is a missive to Rejiek Hidesman from his masters in the Twisted Rune, directing them on how to find his Contact in Imnesvale in order to complete the Human Flesh armor he has been preparing.

Gameplay[]

This letter helps identify the true nature and name of the contact for the unmarked quest Find Rejiek's ally, which in turn unlocks the quest Finish the leather armor begun by Rejiek Hidesman.

The party will have briefly encountered a wizard named Vellin Dahn in the Tanner's Shop Dock area. The wizard's name was revealed from his dialogue box, and there was a journal entry about this:

Journal entry:   Solve the "skinner" murders in the Bridge District
Rejiek was obviously responsible for the murders, according to his own words... and the wizard, Vellin Dahn, in the back of his shop was allied with him and spoke of a larger work that was being performed. I am unsure if this ends here or not, but the tanner has certainly escaped for now. The mage must have spirited him away.

However, once the player resolves the Solve the "skinner" murders in the Bridge District, that particular entry is scrubbed from the player's journal - leaving only the player's memory to recall the name.

The wiki will now remind you of Vellin Dahn- and this clue goes to the "Our names are the same in their scale and their cut" - meaning the same quantity of letters in the first and last name.

Description[]

I am bid to write this by those we serve.

You who carry out the work, I am your humble servant. When at last you need the final ingredient for the grand project, I shall be the one that brings it to you. Seek me out in the hills of Umar and signal your identity with the purchase of the book "The History of the Zhentarim." This will identify you, for I do not know your name, nor should I. The need for security is paramount, so you must also utter my secret name, constructed from the name of your immediate master. There will be no mistake with this method.

Our names are the same in their scale and their cut.
The last of his begins just as the first of mine.
The second of my first is the second of his first, though regressed a full four steps.
The third of my first is four more than the last of his first.
The entire last of my first is the last of his first, except the first one of these is the first of my last.
The first of his last is mine plus one.
The next of my last is the last of his first plus one.
The last of my last are third and second, coming in first for him.

I am sorry for such games, but it is certain that only you shall know this. I await your arrival.

Decipher the letter[]

All the clues necessary to identify the name are included in the letter. This is a good old fashion D&D puzzle for the player to try and figure out. If you need help, then see below.

Select "View" for a step-by-step method:

If you use the name of the mage you found in the cellar of the Tanner Shop: Vellin Dahn, then the following name can be transcribed:

  1. Our names are the same in their scale and their cut:
    Vellin Dahn - ______ ____
  2. The last of his begins just as the first of mine:
    Vellin Dahn - D_____ ____
  3. The second of my first is the second of his first, though regressed a full four steps:
    Vellin Dahn - Da____ ____ (E - 4: E < D < C < B < A)
  4. The third of my first is four more than the last of his first:
    Vellin Dahn - Dar___ ____ (N + 4: N > O > P > Q > R)
  5. The entire last of my first is the last of his first ...:
    Vellin Dahn - Darlin ____
  6. ... except the first one of these is the first of my last:
    Vellin Dahn - Dar*in *___
  7. The first of his last is mine plus one:
    Vellin Dahn - Darcin C___ (D - 1: D < C)
  8. The next of my last is the last of his first plus one:
    Vellin Dahn - Darcin Co__ (N + 1: N > O)
  9. The last of my last are third and second, coming in first for him:
    Vellin Dahn - Darcin Cole
  10. Solution:
    Vellin Dahn - Darcin Cole.

In some languages the correct transcription is not possible, because of an inaccurate translation of the riddle (e.g. german).
