The Wand of Apprenti is a magical wand that is only available for owners of the Mage Stronghold in Shadows of Amn.

This wand was created for you by your apprentices and will randomly cast a variety of three spells, each from a separate elemental source. It apparently has 50 charges.

— Wand of Apprenti

Statistics[]

When activated, the wand will be drained of 1 charge and randomly cast one of the three spells Cone of Cold (with a chance of 35%), Fireball (with a chance of 36%) or Lightning Bolt (with a chance of 29%). When drained of all charges, the wand becomes useless.

Locations[]

I present to you the Wand of the Apprenti.

— Morul

The Wand of the Apprenti can only be acquired as part of the Mage Stronghold quests. It is one of the three magical items – alongside the Dagger of CHARNAME and a Ring of the Princes +1 – that Gorion's Ward can request that their three new apprentices Morul, Larz, and Nara attempt to complete to begin their magical training.

Notes[]

  • The Wand of the Apprenti is the "middle road" of three beginner's items that can be constructed. This means it has a chance to either fail outright and/or kill one of the apprenti, with the outcome being determined when the player first selects this option. As the only way to get quest experience for the Mage Stronghold is to get all apprenti through it alive, it is recommended to save before selecting this item and sleep inside of the Planar Sphere (read: to not advance the game elsewhere) until the wand is complete, so the savegame can be reloaded in case one apprentice died.
  • The Wand of Apprenti can be targeted at items as well as at creatures. If targeted at an item, for some reason, the wand will discharge all three spells simultaneously, instead of randomly launching just one spell (this last statement is either wrong or only applies to older versions of the game. Tested in BG2EE 2.6+).
  • This wand is clearly invoking the trope "Fire, Ice, Lightning"; a common fantasy video-game trope where these three energy types are the primary (or only) forms of offensive magic, which it achieves by casting the three most famous Dungeons & Dragons spells that make use of those elements.
