Not to be confused with Sword of Balduran (BG2).
There are two different items called Sword of Balduran, both enchanted and magical large swords that are part of a set of weapons that belonged to the famous town founder and explorer Balduran. The one described here can be found in the wreck of his ship in Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast.
Tales of the Sword Coast[]
The original artifact is a golden bastard sword with a core of silver and cold iron which is very effective against lycanthropes. However, because gold is a soft and heavy metal, the weapon has no special advantages when fighting against other creatures. This was a ceremonial weapon; not meant for combat.
“ | This ornate but poorly balanced weapon was found within the wreck of Balduran's ship. Gold weapons are not known to be useful in combat, but legends say that only weapons forged of gold can harm such dread creatures as the loup garou. | ” |
Statistics[]
Locations[]
Tales of the Sword Coast[]
- Found in the northern part of the Isle of Balduran on the captain's deck in the wreck of the Wandering Eye, on his desk right behind a floor trap(60 | Flame Strike)
Notes[]
- Though the item with the original code,
SW1H18.itm
, received some of the changes applied in Baldur's Gate II to the Sword of Balduran, it remains unused by the game in Baldur's Gate II original or Enhanced Edition, while the actually available sword in BG2 has the codeWA2S1H.itm
. Without mods, the SW1H18.itm sword appears only in Tales of the Sword Coast and the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate I (which includes the TotSC expansion). If obtained during the first game, the player may carry it into the Siege of Dragonspear expansion, but if they attempt to carry it into Shadows of Amn it will disappear from the player's inventory. Whether or not the player possesses this sword in a Baldur's Gate I Final Save which is imported into Shadows of Amn has no effect on the availability or location of the Baldur's Gate II Sword of Balduran.- Aside from the sword's stats, the description in of the unused SW1H18 version in Baldur's Gate II Enhanced Edition reads:
“ | This ornate but poorly balanced weapon was found beside Balduran's remains. | ” |
This same text appears in the description of the sword in the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate I, confirming that in these editions Balduran canonically died as a result of either the shipwreck or at the claws of the lycanthropes who caused it.
Cut content[]
- Beamdog may have planned a modification of the (original) Sword of Balduran, done by the party or a smith, as there exists a file by the ID
COMPS18.itm
in the game code of both Enhanced Editions; "COMP
" is a typical part of the item filenames for components. This item, however, isn't referenced in any of the games' locations, dialogs or scripts.
