WARNING: There are cases where Jaheira's forced absences break her romance. To limit bug probabilities, do not save/load game while she's away.
Summoned to the Harper Hold is one of two Companion Quests with Jaheira during the Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn campaign.
Acquisition[]
Before this quest can start, the party must first complete Bring the Poisoned Man to his Friends, and then Find out What Happened to Montaron, priorly. This quest has three additional names depending on different stages, listed below as headers.
Jaheira Renounces her Harper Status[]
Meronia[]
Right after Xzar is killed, and after Lucette explains to the party why she killed him, Meronia should appear (unless a particular bug is encountered--see the "Bugs" Section below).
Meronia informs Jaheira that her presence is required by the Harpers, after which she explains it to Gorion's Ward (it is recommended to reply with dialog option #1 and allow her to leave without complaint).
Galvarey[]
Sleep somewhere to trigger Jaheira's return, then accompany her to Harper Hold (aka Galvarey Estate) in the Docks District, where the protagonist will be questioned by Galvarey. He sees what he wants to see, regardless of dialog choices. Soon it becomes obvious that he means harm to the Bhaalspawn. Stand with Jaheira and kill the twisted Galvarey (4,000 XP) and his cohorts, Bessen (2,500 XP), Iko (3,000 XP), Kail (3,000 XP), and Nadinal who wears a Reaching Ring of Wizardry.
Reviane[]
After some time has passed, perhaps a few days, Reviane appears, backed up by a group of four other Harpers to call Jaheira into account for the events at Galvarey Estate. This encounter may happen anywhere in the wilderness, or within populated areas.
With a high enough reputation (16 or higher), and the right dialogue choices (1,2), Reviane can be convinced to stand down. Otherwise, prepare for battle. Beware of crossfire injuring innocents, if she appears within in a town or city, as this may cause other characters to join in the battle, including the Military. Reviane and her group are worth a total of 16,000 XP if slain. There is no XP reward if combat is avoided.
Dermin[]
After more time has passed, perhaps three days, an old acquaintance of Jaheira named Dermin Courtierdale appears, "not...to rehash our friendship... I have been sent to kill you, or otherwise seek your downfall... you travel with a killer of Harpers... your own have died. What do you intend to do about it?" This gives the "killer of Harpers" a chance to respond:
- Jaheira, do what you must. I have been the cause of too much trouble for you.
- Don't let this fool scare you, Jaheira. They have no right to meddle as they do!
- Do not turn on me, Jaheira. You will end as your fellows did. Warning: This option results in Jaheira leaving the party for good.
- This is an unfortunate situation they have placed you in, Jaheira. I trust your judgement though.
Choose options 1, 2 or 4. Ultimately, Jaheira renounces her standing as a Harper, and she says goodbye to Dermin. Gorion's Ward then has a final dialog choice:
- Well, now that this bit of garbage is over we can get back to what's important. Warning: This option results in Jaheira leaving the party for good.
- Are you certain of this, Jaheira? I did not want to be a burden.
- You have a place here, Jaheira, regardless of this mess.
Choose options 2 or 3. The player's Journal updates under "Jaheira renounces her Harper status" and Dermin leaves for now.
The Return to Harper Hold[]
Six days later Dermin returns and warns that Jaheira's death has been arranged unless she goes with him, which she agrees to think about. The player's Journal updates under "The return to Harper Hold" and Dermin leaves again.
Upon waking up, after resting the next time in the wilderness, the protagonist finds that Jaheira has departed. Soon a strange Mage named Terminsel arrives with Jaheira's Note for [Gorion's Ward] urging the ward not to follow, explaining why she has left, and her destination; Harper Hold. You can pickpocket Terminsel for The Guard's Ring, The Protector, Bracers to the Death, and The Spirit's Shield.
Return to Galvarey Estate and deal with two groups of Dermin's Mercenaries. The first group of three Fighters is on the ground floor. Go upstairs to welcome Jaheira back to the party. Go to the dormitory and search the chests to finally solve the mystery of what happened to Montaron for 20,000 XP. Head back downstairs to deal with a second group (two Fighters, a Half-Orc Thief, a Cleric, and an Elf Mage). All mercenaries are worth a total of 21,000 XP. Notable loot includes a Dagger +2, a few +1 arms and armor, potions, and Well-Off to Wealthy Random Treasure on each mercenary.
The Harper Plot Revealed[]
After at least two days, sleep eight hours outdoors. Dermin appears a third time, but now with backup: Lennah, Thenry, Jeremon, and Chrost.
Jaheira and him have it out with a war of words, then the battle begins. Afterwards, Jaheira seems quite upset about this recent turn of events.
After a long, long time has passed since the battle with Dermin, Terminsel shows up again and asks Jaheira a series of questions. Jaheira's firm answers leads to:
- 100,000 XP for the protagonist + Harper Pin if romancing Jaheira, with at least 10 reputation
- 100,000 XP for protagonist if romancing her, with a reputation less than 10
- Harper Pin, if not romancing her and have at least 15 reputation
- Nothing, if not romancing her and reputation is less than 15
Terminsel's name is an anagram for... Elminster. Impatient? Force Terminsel appear via console:

Bugs[]
- During Xzar's quest, is possible to kill the Harper's assassin Lucette while she is killing Xzar. However, the result is, her dialog with the party never happens, which means Meronia will not appear to get Jaheira to return to Harper Hold, effectively breaking the entire Harper Hold Plot line, and halting any further Romance "LoveTalk" events that Gorion's Ward might normally have with Jaheira (i.e., Jaheira's Local variable named LOVETALK might be stuck at 27). Trying to fix it by manually spawning Meronia with
CLUAConsole:CreateCreature("JAMERONI")
will probably fail, because after the Meronia/Jaheira dialog, Jaheira leaves the party but does not go with Meronia; she just stands there with "nothing to say to you." If you cannot reload from a prior save, try spawning Xzar again (CRE Code:LYROS
), accept his quest, then immediately spawn Lucette (HARPASS1
) to kill Xzar... again. Afterwards you should be able to talk to Lucette to get her dialog about why she was sent to kill Xzar. After talking, Lucette should walk away, and Meronia should enter the scene to have Jaheira leave properly. (Tested in SoA Classic.) - The following Console Command can help to determine if the Harper Quest has stalled, while Gorion's Ward is in a Romance with Jaheira, due to the current value of Jaheira's Local "LOVETALK" variable. Type the command
CLUAConsole:GetGlobal("LoveTalk","LOCALS")
into the console and while the cursor is still on the command line, hover the mouse over Jaheira, and then press Enter. While in a Romance, the quest will not advance until given LoveTalk Values have been reached. (Tested in SoA Classic.) For example:- Meronia will not appear unless LoveTalk = 27, after Jaheira says, "This is a dangerous life we seem to lead, it does seem. I wonder if you always think it will be so?"
- Also, an encounter with a particular Bandit Group must occur before LoveTalk can advance from 27 to 29 (the value goes up by 2 for almost every talk, and is nearly always an odd number). If Meronia already appeared, but LoveTalk is still stuck at 27, go out to a wilderness area and rest. Be prepared; the party will be awoken by a group of bandits which will most likely end in combat. - Likewise, Reviane will not appear unless LoveTalk = 35, after Jaheira says, "I have been in a similar place as this before, though it was in the company of other Harpers. I will miss those times."
- Dermin's first appearance can be as early as LoveTalk = 41, after Jaheira says, "There is an ill wind in the air. Do you feel it? I feel a storm inside, in the distance."
- Dermin's second appearance (and Terminsel's first) is when LoveTalk = 53 after Jaheira asks, "How...how did that battle make you feel? Did you enjoy it?"
- Dermin's third appearance along with his assassination squad is after LoveTalk changes from 55 to 56. after Jaheira says, "Ah, the dawning of our day, though it is very rarely that we match our sleep to the cycle of day or night." After another rest in the wilderness, it moves to 57 just before Dermin's party appears.
- Terminsel appears again at the final stage of the romance, when LoveTalk >= 70 [verification needed].
