Strength of One is a 3rd level priest spell available to all divine magic casters in all the Baldur's gate games.
Description[]
| “ | When this spell is cast, party members within the area of effect are given a Strength score of 18/75. If a party member has a Strength score higher than this (either naturally, or through a magical item), then their Strength is lowered to 18/75. The spell lasts for 1 turn, whereupon everyone's Strength returns to normal. | ” |
Gameplay[]
This spell is directed upon the caster automatically with no need to select a target.
When the spell cast is finished, the caster and any party affiliated creatures/companions within 15-feet of the caster are all affected by the Strength of One spell's powers.
Each affected creature will be named with a text reading "Strength of One", as well as a bluish "strongarm flexing bicep" 3D graphic animation and brief color glow rendering on their sprite.
A player character will show an icon (No. 21) titled "Strength" on their portrait for the spell's duration.
The spell sets each affected creature's current Strength attribute to 18/75, even if it may have been greater than that prior to the spell's application.
A strength value of 18/75 provides a 2-point THAC0 and 3-point damage bonus with melee/thrown/sling weapon attacks, as well as a specific bashing and weight carrying allowance.
The spell can potentially be removed with any applicable Dispel Magic effect.
A sound effect will audible when the spell expires.
A second casting of this spell won't increase or change the recipient's strength, but it will refresh the spell's duration.
Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition priest spell Strength of One is commonly known by priests with access to the sphere of Law, according to the Tome of Magic.
The PnP spell's design is quite different than the one implemented in the BG video game.
By casting this spell on a group of lawful creatures, the priest imbues each creature with a Strength bonus equal to that of the strongest creature in the group. To be affected by the spell, all creatures must touch the hand of the priest at the time of casting. Only human, demihuman, and humanoid creatures of man-size or smaller may be affected. The characters can be a mixed group of Lawful Neutral, Lawful Good, or Lawful Evil alignments. The spell will not take effect if any creature of Neutral or Chaotic alignment is included in the group.
Prior to casting, one creature is designated the keystone. There may never be more than one keystone in a group, even if another creature has equal strength.
Upon completion of the spell, all affected characters gain a bonus to damage equal to the keystone's bonus to damage from Strength. Any magical bonuses belonging to the keystone are not added; only the keystone's natural strength is conferred on the group.
