When a wizard casts Stoneskin, an outer skin of stone will envelope his body.

Effects[]

Stoneskin
When a wizard casts this powerful spell upon himself, an outer skin of stone will move up from the ground, completely covering him. This skin is of course magical and will hinder the wizard in no way. The effect of this is to protect the wizard from physical attacks such as melee weapons and projectiles. For every 2 levels of the caster, an additional skin is gained upon casting. For example, a 10th-level wizard would receive 5 skins while a 20th-level wizard would receive 10. For each skin the wizard possesses, the spell will stop one attack, so a 10th-level wizard would be protected from the first 5 attacks made against him, but the 6th would affect him normally. The skins will remain on the wizard until they are affected by Dispel Magic, Remove Magic, or similar dispelling spells, all of the skins are removed due to physical attacks, or the spell duration expires. It is important to note that this will not protect the wizard from any magical attacks, such as Fireball.

Gameplay[]

  • Stoneskin only protects from the physical damage of an attack. If a wizard protected by Stoneskin is hit with a weapon that inflicts some sort of elemental or magical damage – like e.g. fire – on top or exclusively, this damage component will still hurt the wizard. The same goes for on-hit effects from creature attacks, like the level drain from a Vampire's claw attack, those still apply. Mirror Image, plus Protection From Magical Weapons or the Mantle spells, are good additions to Stoneskin in that regard, because they also negate all on-hit effects by affected weapons.
  • Stoneskin can protect against each instance of applied crushing, slashing, piercing, missile or stunning (non lethal subdual) damage. For instance, a creature protected by 10 stoneskins will be able to withstand ten different and individually applied physical damage hits and suffer no physical damage. Each time the Stoneskin absorbs a physical attack, one skin is consumed.
  • A spell effect or innate power that applies physical damage can also be blocked with Stoneskin, such as Bigby's Crushing Hand, an Alchemical trap, or the Wand of Whips. Other status effects applied by the spell won't be blocked by the Stoneskin, such as Hold/Paralyze or Stun.
  • If an attack misses the creature protected by Stoneskin, then no interaction of the skin applies, and no skin is consumed.
  • It can be removed with Breach, Dispel / Remove Magic or by hitting it enough times.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, revising its description. See below for description:

Stoneskin Level: 4
School: Alteration
Range: Personal
Duration: 8 hours
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: Caster
Saving Throw: None
When a wizard casts this powerful spell upon himself, an outer skin of stone will emerge from the ground, completely covering and shielding him. This skin is, of course, magical and will hinder the wizard in no way. The effect of this is to protect the wizard from physical attacks such as melee weapons and projectiles. One skin is gained for every two levels of the caster. For example, a 10th level wizard would receive 5 skins while a 20th level wizard would receive 10. For each skin the wizard possesses, the spell will stop one attack, so a 10th level wizard would be protected from the first 5 attacks made against him, but the sixth would affect him normally. The skins will remain on the wizard until he is affected by a dispel magic, all of the skins are removed due to physical attacks, or the spell duration expires.
It is important to note that this will not protect the wizard from any area attacks (such as Fireball), and that any weapon capable of inflicting some type of elemental damage can still harm the caster - the skins will not protect against fire, cold, acid, or electrical damage, even if physical damage is blocked. Multiple castings of this spell are not cumulative.
