Baldur's Gate Wiki

Stinking Cloud creates a cloud of nauseating vapor that potentially causes temporary unconsciousness.

Description[]

When casting a Stinking Cloud spell, the wizard creates a billowing mass of nauseous vapors up to 90 40 ft away from <PRO_HISHER> position. Any creature caught within the cloud must roll a successful Saving Throw vs. Poison at +2 or be sent reeling and fall down (sleep) for 1d2 rounds 9 seconds. Those who make successful Saving Throws can leave the cloud without suffering any ill effects, although those remaining in the cloud must continue to save each round. A Dispel Magic will remove the nausea on a particular character, but if they remain in the cloud, then they are still subject to its effects.

Gameplay[]

The caster designates a point on the area map to direct this spell toward using the targeting cursor.

When the spell casting is finished, a fast-moving projectile moves to the designated point and expands into a billowing cloud - filling about 15' radius (30' diameter) area of effect.

All creatures in the area of effect are exposed to the nauseating vapors, and a Saving throw versus Poison (with a 2-point bonus) is required each round within the cloud in order to resist the effects.

A failed saving throw results in a temporary Unconscious effect lasting 9 seconds - the victim falls prone to the ground and is Helpless.

A player character affected by this spell will have an icon (No. 126) titled "Nauseated" rendered on their portrait.

Damaging the unconscious victim will not arouse or awaken them - they are basically unresponsive and "out cold".

Strangely, the cloud will not cause innocent or neutral creatures to turn hostile, regardless of if they succeed or fail their saving throw.

This spell can be blocked by Magic resistance, a Minor Globe of Invulnerability, or Spell Immunity: Evocation.

The spell won't affect the Undead or construct/golem creatures.

The only way to disperse this cloud is to use a Zone of Sweet Air in the area, or it can be blown away by a dragon's Wing Buffet as well.

A victim who is unconscious can be revived if the nausea is removed with an appropriate Dispel Magic effect, but as long as the creature remains in the cloud, the next round requires another saving throw and may be affected again.

Note that Elf and Half-elf creatures don't have any racial resistance to this particular spell, such as they typically enjoy with a magical Sleep (Status Effect).

In BGEE (not BG2EE), this spell doesn't break invisibility, meaning the character will remain invisible even after casting Stinking Cloud.

Trivia[]

The Advanced Dungeon and Dragons Wizard spell Stinking Cloud doesn't cause unconsciousness; it can however make victims nauseous and periodically be unable to attack. It's also resistant to being dispersed by wind, and it magically returns and is more persistent. See the External links for further reading.

Mod content[]

This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

Spell Revisions mod has reworked this arcane spell, changing its saving throw and school. See below for description:
Stinking Cloud
Level: 2
School: Conjuration
Range: Long
Duration: 1 turn
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: 30’ radius
Saving Throw: Poison negates

When Stinking Cloud is cast, a billowing mass of nauseous vapors appears centered on a point selected by the caster. Any creature caught within the cloud must roll a successful saving throw vs. poison or be nauseated for 1 round. Nauseated characters are unable to attack or cast spells, but can still move. Those who make successful saving throws can leave the cloud without suffering any ill effects, although those remaining in the cloud must continue to save each round. A dispel magic will temporarily remove the nausea from a particular character, but they will continue to be subjected to the spell’s effects so long as they remain within the cloud. Certain creatures are immune to the effects of the cloud, including all undead, and creatures who don’t need to breathe, such as elementals.

Note:The SR spell version doesn't cause unconsciousness - it instead will set the victim's attacks per round to zero (so it can't attack) and a 100% miscast magic effect to Wizard and Priest spells. Elementals, slimes, golems and undead are immune. This spell is now flagged as a "Hostile" spell.
