A Steam Mephit is an extra-planar "outsider" (i.e., linked to various Elemental, Quasi-Elemental and Outer planes of existence). These creatures are similar to Imps and are found in a number of areas during the Baldur's Gate II games.
Gameplay[]
A Steam Mephit can attack twice per round in melee for 1d4 slashing damage and an additional +1 fire damage. It also has two innate ability attacks.
The mephit will initiate the Boiling Rain Storm ability as its first action when an enemy is detected and in range. The rain is described as:
“ | Boiling Rain Storm
This ability calls down a rain of noxious, boiling water. Enemies in the area take 2d6 poison damage and must save vs. Breath Weapon or be stunned for 1 round. |
” |
Note that this storm has an area of effect, and enemies within will be potentially exposed to the effects. However, magic resistance can block it, and it has level 2 spell power, so a Minor Globe of Invulnerability could also shield the exposed character from harm.
A 12 second delay will take place, and the mephit may attack in melee combat during this period. Once the delay has transpired, the mephit will launch its Water Jet attack, described as:
“ | Water Jet
This ability launches a glob of scalding steam at a single target, dealing 1d3 fire damage. The target must also make a Saving Throw vs. Breath Weapon or be stunned for 1 round. |
” |
The Water Jet is fires cone shaped projectile at a single target in range, but it has an area of effect (similar to the Cone of Cold spell) that can also apply the detrimental Jet to any enemies in that cone shaped area. A Saving throw vs. Breath will negate the Stun effect, but not the fire damage.
If the target fails the saving throw the affected creature will be Stunned and display a Stun icon on their portrait and be Helpless for 1 round. Additionally, the victim will also suffer 1d3 fire damage. As the water jet has the equivalent of 2 spell power, a spell protection such as Minor Globe of Invulnerability or similar will stop it, as well as Magic resistance.
The Steam Mephit has no magic, or physical damage resistance. It does however have immunity to fire damage.
The InfoBox summarizes the creature's special abilities and immunities to certain status effects. The game has the creature with a memorized Blur spell but it isn't scripted to use it, so it is probably just a developer creature file copy-paste remnant.
