You has Staff of the Ram...5,000 gp and the Roranach's Horn and upgrades it I can.

— Cespenar

The Staff of the Ram is a quarterstaff that has a chance of knocking back and stunning the enemy. This does not work against dragons, giants or other large creatures.

It is similar to a Staff of Striking but it is more powerful and does not use charges. Its creator might be the same of the Ring of the Ram.

Staff of the Ram +4[]

Acquisition[]

Description[]

Likely created by the same unknown archmage who is responsible for the Ring of the Ram, this Staff of Striking does not use charges and will never become useless.

Gameplay Staff +4[]

The weapon is a +4 enchanted quarterstaff with a reach of 2 feet, and a weapon speed factor of 1.

Each successful hit can inflict 1d6+10 Crushing damage, and the weapon provides a 4 point THAC0 bonus.

There is a 10% chance of the blow causing the targeted creature to be exposed to a Wing buffet/knockback effect, which lasts 2 seconds and pushes the creature away from the wielder up to 20 feet distance.

At the same time, the knockback "stuns" the target, lasting 6 seconds. This is actually an Unconscious status effect rather than a Stun effect.

The knockback and stun can't be blocked by Magic resistance, spell protections, and has no Saving throw, nor can it be dispelled.

The knockback effect is sub-coded to not work against very large creatures such as a dragon or giant/ettin etc.

Staff of the Ram +6[]

Acquisition[]

Description[]

Roranach's Horn augments the Staff of the Ram's already noteworthy abilities, creating a weapon few opponents are able to stand against.

Improvements[]

  • Enchantment level and damage: +2
  • Weight: -1
  • THAC0: -2
  • Additional piercing damage: 1d4[Bugs 1]
  • Probability of the knock back and stun combat ability: +5%
  • Value: +4,000gp

Gameplay Staff +6[]

The upgraded weapon is a +6 enchanted quarterstaff with a reach of 2 deet, and a weapon speed factor of 1.

Each successful hit can inflict 1d6+12 Crushing damage, plus 1d4 Piercing damage, and the weapon provides a 6 point THAC0 bonus.

There is a 15% chance of the blow causing the targeted creature to be exposed to a Wing buffet/knockback effect, which lasts 2 seconds and pushes the creature away from the wielder up to 20 feet distance.

At the same time, the knockback "stuns" the target, lasting 6 seconds. This is actually an Unconscious status effect rather than a Stun effect.

The knockback and stun can't be blocked by Magic resistance, spell protections, and has no Saving throw, nor can it be dispelled.

There is a reported problem as of EE 2.6 with how the +6 staff responds to large creatures struck. It apparently needs a fix to make it not apply the knockback effect to large creatures.

Notes[]

This staff is probably the highest damaging weapon for backstabbing, similar to a Staff of Striking but more powerful and without use of charges.

There is a higher damaging Shapechange form that can outperform peak backstab damage from this staff, but from a wielded actual weapon viewpoint, the Staff of the Ram +6 is king of backstab damage potential.

Bugs[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 In the original BGII: ToB the item description states an additional 1d4 piercing damage. However, this is not applied to the item file, the staff deals only 1d6 +12 crushing damage. This has been fixed in the Enhanced Edition.

As of BG2EE 2.6, The knockback effect of the Staff of the Ram +6 should not work on large creatures. This is identified and corrected in The Enhanced Edition Fixpack (EEFP). Ref: (staf22.itm)
