The Staff of Command is a special Quarterstaff +2 introduced in Baldur's Gate II Chapter 5 only.
Description[]
| “ | Staff of Command
The staff allows the user to dominate another creature, each use draining one charge. This item is of the kind used by nefarious people seeking to sway others to follow their ways. |
” |
Aquisition[]
It can be found in the Mind Flayers in Underdark area, stored in a piece of illthid furniture.
Gameplay[]
The weapon inflicts 1d6 +2 points of crushing damage, has -2 THAC0 bonus and a speed factor of 3. It weighs 3 lbs. and it requires at least 5 strength to wield. Only monks cannot wield this weapon.
The staff's most amazing power is the ability to expend a charge - and then launch a projectile at a single target in a 40' range. Once the projectile reaches the target the creature is exposed to a potent Dire Charm effect. There is no saving throw allowed.
If the Dire Charm effect is successful, then the creature is affected for 12 hours (!). Once the duration is expired or if the creature is attacked by the party, or the effect dispelled - the creature will be freed of the charm and hostile to the caster/party.
The staff's Dire Charm is a 5 Power level effect, and thus can be stopped by several Spell Protections, such as Spell Deflection or Spell Turning.
Magic resistance can block this effect, as will Spell Immunity: Enchantment.
Creatures immune to Charm Creature effects will be protected from this staff's ability. Elves and Half elves are resistant to it as well.
The staff has a 25-charge capacity. If all the charges are used up, the staff will be disabled.
