The Staff of Air is an enchanted Quarterstaff +2 which can destroy Air Elementals upon a successful hit if a save vs. spell fails. The staff deals 1d6 +2 (crushing) damage, with a -2 THAC0 bonus, weighs 3 lbs. and has a speed factor of 2. A successful melee hit upon an Air Elemental does not consume any charges and will not destroy the staff.
Once per 8-hour rest, the wielder may summon an 8-hit die Air Elemental for 1-hour. The creature summoned is SUMELAIR.CRE detailed at the Lesser Air Elemental page.
The wielder may also use a charge to produce a Sleep Cloud up to 40 feet away for 3 rounds (save vs. death to negate). For this ability, the staff has a maximum of ten charges. Once the charges are expended, this ability is disabled, but can be recharged by selling it, and buying it back (recharged).
The Sleep Cloud is a level 0 Area of Effect Spell, and thus will ignore spell level Immunities, such as Globe of Invulnerability. Magic Resistance can block the cloud. The cloud's sleep effect can be dispelled. The cloud is coded as an Enchantment School spell, disabling type. As a sleep effect, Elven kind receive their natural resistance checks before having to make a saving throw. Creatures immune or protected from sleep will not be affected by the Sleep Cloud. The cloud projectile can be removed and dispersed by a Wing Buffet or spell like Zone of Sweet Air/Gust of Wind. Use of the cloud will not be considered a hostile act. Finally, the sleep effect will not be removed by damaging the sleeping creature.
This item appears in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Description[]
“ | Staff of Air
This staff seems to draw from eleven artistic traditions, though tied less to the forest than is usually customary. It was apparently designed to control air elementals, being able to summon one as a servant to the wielder, and potentially destroying creatures of the same type in a single blow. When necessary, it can also spawn a cloud of gas causing anyone within the area of effect to fall into a deep slumber. Some effects are limited by charges. |

Bugs[]
As of BG2EE 2.6, The respective Staves of Air/Earth/Fire could charm their respective elementals, however, the sound that accompanied the charm would play on all targets even if they weren't subject to the charm itself. This is identified for correction in the pending Enhanced Edition Fix Pack (EEFP). Ref: (staf15.itm, staf16.itm, staf17.itm)
