Staff Spear is a magical Quarterstaff +2 found in many Baldur's Gate versions and campaigns.
Anyone can use this staff except for the Monk class.
Gameplay[]
This quarterstaff is a +2 Enchanted item that appears as a quarterstaff when not equipped and lying on the ground/in a container, but when equipped it takes on the form of a spear.
The item is still treated as a quarterstaff in terms of what Weapon Proficiency is needed, not a spear weapon - this peculiar mechanic allows a mage to wield a spear type weapon, or a cleric for example.
Despite the item's description, there is no "command" needed to turn the staff into a spear - that's just a literary flourish.
The weapon has a reach range of 2 and inflicts 1d8+3 Piercing damage on any successful hit, and the item also provides a 2-point THAC0 bonus as well.
The user's Strength attribute can further modify the weapon's to-hit and damage values.
Description[]
| “ | When this seemingly ordinary quarterstaff is examined magically, it has an aura of alteration. Upon command, a long sharp spear blade will shoot forth from the upper end, making the staff into a spear. This weapon was designed mainly for priests and wizards although it is usable by anybody. | ” |
