The Staff Mace +2 is a Quarterstaff +2 which can transform into a mace, although when wielded it is a mace always, even for mages. This weapon has the properties of both staff (range 2ft) and mace (one-handed); it is a weapon which can be wielded in one hand and be used by anyone, except Monks.
Gameplay[]
One of this weapon's advantages over something like a regular mace is the 2ft. range for a 1-handed weapon. This can be particularly useful for dual-wielding characters, as only the range of the mainhand weapon is considered in that case. So, for example, if a character wields this weapons along with a dagger in the offhand (range 1ft), they'll still be able to attack from range 2 (similar to a quarterstaff, that can, say, reach from behind another party member).
The above information is especially powerful for hit-and-run tactics and even more so when combined with a character who can lower the weapon's already-decent initial speed factor (2) down to 0 and/or gain additional attacks-per-round. Speed factor, extra attacks-per-round and range are all important considerations for characters trying to attack before their enemies and this weapon excels in two of those (but doesn't give any extra APR).
Description[]
Baldur's Gate[]
“ | Staff Mace +2 This clerical weapon appears to be a normal wooden staff of the type used when trekking in the wilderness. It gives off a very faint aura of alteration magic. Upon identification of the command word, the staff takes on the attributes of a mace, which allows it to be wielded with one hand. This was designed for both priests and druids. |

Baldur's Gate EE[]
“ | This weapon appears to be a normal large walking staff, but it has a faint aura of alteration magic. Uttering the command word causes the staff to assume the attributes of a mace, allowing it to be welded with one hand. This was likely designed for Clerics or Druids, though that does not preclude use by others. | ” |
