Spider's Bane (Spider's Bane +2 in-game) is a magical and enchanted two-handed sword. Despite what its name may suggest, it does not have any specific attack bonuses against spiders. It bestows the Free Action status effect, granting the wielder immunity against magic and other effects which affect movement like slow, hold and spider webs. It also has the unfortunate side-effect of preventing increases to movement speed as well, such as with The Paws of the Cheetah boots, and the character will not gain any benefits from Haste. Like all +2 weapons, it also has +2 bonus to damage and THAC0 and a speed factor two points lower than a normal two-handed sword.

Gameplay[]

  • Equipping the sword does not cure or remove any effects already on the character. This can be used to the player's advantage; for example, the wielder can temporarily switch to different weapon, have a party member cast Haste, and switch back, granting the benefits of both Haste and Free Action.

Description[]

This sword was originally forged by the dwarves of the Orothiar tribe in Cloakwood. They created the blade to help foster goodwill between them and the Grand Dukes of Baldur's Gate. Wielded by the Grand Dukes for about a century, the sword was eventually lost, ironically in a fight against ettercaps and spiders. Who wields the blade is now unknown, but its recovery would aid greatly in fighting the current spider infestation that plagues the Cloakwood.

Mod related[]

Though being still present in the game code of Baldur's Gate II, the two-handed sword does make no appearance in the original campaigns. The mod Unfinished Business implements it with the quest "Pai'Na and Spider's Bane".
