Sleep causes the victims to immediately fall into a deep slumber.

Description[]

Sleep
When a wizard casts a Sleep spell, he causes a comatose slumber to come upon one or more enemies (other than undead and certain other creatures specifically excluded from the spell's effects). All creatures to be affected by the Sleep spell must be within a 30-ft. radius. Creatures in the area of effect must make a Saving Throw vs. Death with a -3 penalty or fall asleep. Monsters with 5 Hit Dice or more are unaffected. Attacks against sleeping opponents never miss.

Gameplay[]

Enemies susceptible to this spell that fail their Saving throw are essentially made Helpless for the spell's duration.

Each creature affected by this spell will be indicated in the combat log with a text display reading "Sleep".

A party member affected by this spell will display a portrait icon (No. 14) Sleep.

The spell can be blocked by Magic resistance and stopped by a Minor Globe of Invulnerability.

It can also be negated by a Spell Immunity: Enchantment spell.

A Dispel Magic effect can remove this spell from the victim.

However, many "strong" enemies, mostly in in Baldur's Gate I are still affected:

Very few enemies (mostly just certain Sahuagin) in Baldur's Gate II can be affected, and the spell isn't of much use.

The Wand of Sleep also applies an emulated version of this spell, although the wand uses a different projectile and saving throw than the spell.

Enemies Immune to Sleep[]

Enemies not immune to Sleep will either:

  • fall asleep or
  • Show a saving throw message in the combat log. The combat log is available under Options, Gameplay, Feedback.

Enemies that don't fall asleep or display a saving throw message are immune to the Sleep spell.

Enemies of at least level 5 and therefore immune:

Immune to all Sleep effects (Sleep, Color Spray, Command, Stinking Cloud, Power Word, Sleep, Emotion: Hopelessness, Greater Command):

Trivia[]

The Baldur's Gate game spell version of sleep is in some ways much more powerful than the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition Sleep spell. Of particular note, in the PnP game, a creature put to sleep will awaken when slapped or harmed, taking one round to do so - this isn't implemented in the BG video game version, and thus being put to sleep is very close to a death sentence if the victim is attacked.

Mod content[]

This section is about unofficial content that is only available via fan-made mods.

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, changing its effects, saving throw and scaling. See below for description:
Sleep
Level: 1
School: Enchantment
Range: Long
Duration: 5 rounds
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 30’ radius
Saving Throw: Spell negates

When a wizard casts a Sleep spell, he causes a comatose slumber to come upon one or more creatures. Creatures in the area of effect must make a saving throw vs. spell or fall asleep. Any further attempts to harm the targets will waken them. Opponents with more Hit Dice/levels than the caster are unaffected by this spell. Elves and half-elves are particularly resistant to sleep effects, while the undead and certain other creatures such as dragons and elementals are completely immune to magically induced sleep.

Note:This spell only affects enemy creatures of the caster.
