Sleep causes the victims to immediately fall into a deep slumber.
Effects[]
“ | Sleep When a wizard casts a Sleep spell, he causes a comatose slumber to come upon one or more enemies (other than undead and certain other creatures specifically excluded from the spell's effects). All creatures to be affected by the Sleep spell must be within a 30-ft. radius. Creatures in the area of effect must make a Saving Throw vs. Death with a -3 penalty or fall asleep. Monsters with 5 Hit Dice or more are unaffected. Attacks against sleeping opponents never miss. |

Gameplay notes[]
The effect of the spell is more equal to paralysis or a coma rather than sleep, as affected creatures will not wake up when attacked. As a result, Sleep is essentially equivalent to the Hold Person spell, but can affect infinite number of creatures, works on creatures that don't count as a "Person", has a harder saving throw and is available on level 1. The only downside is that the enemy needs to be level 4 or below, which mostly limits its use to Baldur's Gate.
However, many strong enemies are still affected:
- Ankheg
- Ogre Berserker
- Blacktalon Elite
- most Sirines
- Carrion Crawler
- Huge Spider
- Hobgoblin Elite
- Kobold Commando
The Wand of Sleep also applies an emulated version of this spell, although the wand uses a different projectile than the spell.
Enemies Immune to Sleep[]
Enemies not immune to Sleep will either:
- fall asleep or
- show a saving throw message in the combat log. The combat log is available under Options, Gameplay, Feedback.
Enemies that don't fall asleep or display a saving throw message are immune to the Sleep spell.
Enemies of at least level 5 and therefore immune:
- Winter Wolf
- Cave Bear, Polar Bear, Mountain Bear
- some of the Sirines
- Ogre Mage
- Ettercap
- Basilisk
- Sword Spider, Phase Spider
- Wyvern
- Hamadryad
Immune to all Sleep effects (Sleep, Color Spray, Command, Stinking Cloud, Power Word, Sleep, Emotion: Hopelessness, Greater Command):
- Undead: Zombie, Skeleton, Ghoul, Ghast, Dread Wolf (EE), Vampiric Wolf, Revenant
- Golems: Flesh Golem, Doomsayer, Doom Guard, Battle Horror, Helmed Horror, Invisible Stalker
- Slimes
- Wraith Spider
- Doppelganger

Spell Revisions mod has changed this arcane spell, changing its effects, saving throw and scaling. See below for description:
Sleep
Level: 1
School: Enchantment
Range: Long
Duration: 5 rounds
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: 30’ radius
Saving Throw: Spell negates
When a wizard casts a Sleep spell, he causes a comatose slumber to come upon one or more creatures. Creatures in the area of effect must make a saving throw vs. spell or fall asleep. Any further attempts to harm the targets will waken them. Opponents with more Hit Dice/levels than the caster are unaffected by this spell. Elves and half-elves are particularly resistant to sleep effects, while the undead and certain other creatures such as dragons and elementals are completely immune to magically induced sleep.
