Thaxll'ssillyia, an example of a shadow dragon

Shadow Dragons are a species of dragon in the Forgotten Realms world who normally exist within the Plane of Shadow, but sometimes migrate back to Toril. Whilst they may superficially resemble black dragons with their deeply black coloration, their sadistic personalities, and their love for consuming food that has been purposefully rotted and decayed, they are far more powerful and possess unique abilities. Their most iconic feature is their breath weapon; a cloud of liquid darkness that both blinds and saps the life from whatever it touches.

Encounters[]

Only a single Shadow Dragon is encountered during the events of the Baldur's Gate Trilogy. A male shadow dragon name Thaxll'ssillyia is lairing within the Ruined Temple of Amaunator in the Umar Hills during the events of Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. It acts as the most powerful minion of the Shade Lord, and is a very tough battle. However, it can be passed by harmlessly if the player completes the unmarked quest to obtain the Shadow Dragon Wardstone from the spirits of the Amaunator priests still haunting the temple.
