Samuel and Lena is a side quest that begins in the Gibberling Mountains area east of the Nashkel Mines. Lena will ask the party to carry her very ill friend Samuel to Gellana Mirrorshade at the Temple of Wisdom in the Friendly Arm Inn area. If you insist on payment she will give you a Jade Ring.
This quest is in direct conflict with the Samuel the Deserter quest given by the Flaming Fist Mercenary in the Gibberling Mountains area. This one offers far better rewards, but the Friendly Arm Inn is far away, Samuel (who must be carried) weighs 100 lbs (115 lbs in BG:EE), and the quest is on a very short timer. The party has 72 hours to succeed, and travel from Gibberling Mountains to Friendly Arm Inn takes 40 hrs, so it should be easily completed so long as the party doesn't stop to smell the Xvarts along the way (in other words, so long as they don't waste much time, but travel to the Inn soon). The only way to complete both quests is to first complete this one, kill Gellana Mirrorshade, loot Samuel's body from her corpse, and then deliver it to the Flaming Fist Mercenary.
If Samuel is delevered to the Temple of Wisdom before he dies, the party gets 500 exp, two potions (see sidebar) and +1 to the party's reputation.

Sadly, we did not bring Samuel to the Temple of Wisdom in time. Gellana Mirrorshade could not save him, and he died.
