An unnamed rakshasa marked in-game as Ruhk is found in Spellhold Bodhi's Hunt Level 1. He is guarding the Gem Portal alongside some Mephit minions.

Gameplay[]

Behind a closed door, and down a short corridor is a square room with a glowing magical portal on one wall - framed within an obvious door shape - stands the Rukh and several mephits. They are positioned in front of it facing towards where a visitor will enter. The creatures are hostile.

When a party member is detected, the Rukh will attempt to spell cast and target the nearest enemy with a Fireball, then a sequentially try and cast a Chromatic Orb, Lightning Bolt and Magic Missile. Any enemy in melee range can also be engaged with its long sword.

The Rukh is not particularly skilled with its long sword, but will engage in close quarters combat, as it is quick as a tiger whirling its blade. The creature is very resistant to spells and at least +2 enchanted items are needed to hit it.

The simplistic spell casting script is designed to apply offensive damage, but the creature has no ability to recognize any of the party members protections or immunities. A Minor Globe of Invulnerability for example, will neuter this Rukh's spell casting threat. It's even possible that the fireball spell cast can harm some of its own mephit minions if they are in the area of effect.

Defeating the Ruhk and mephit minions allows unimpeded access to the Gem Portal should the party wish to interact with the object.

Mod content[]

The Sword Coast Stratagems takes a different approach to this Rukh and assigns a new default script to improve its tactical awareness and allow it to perform as a mage and a sword wielder.

In terms of its weapon proficiencies, it now has 3 pips in long sword and 2 pips in single-weapon fighting style - this will improve the THAC0, weapon damage, APR and armor class.

The creature will apply a (previously cast) group of protective buffs to include: Mirror Image, Improved Haste, Shield, Stoneskin and Protection From Magical Weapons.

The Rukh can assess opponents for certain protective spells and may decide to cast a Secret Word and has a Breach.

Several offensive damage spells are in the repertoire, including Cone of Cold, Lightning Bolt, Sunfire and others. In all the creature has 30 memorized spells and a prepared Minor Sequencer that can be instantly released.

Cloudkill will be attempted, but not in the first five rounds. As that would slay all the mephit minions too.

If the battle is dragging on and the creature's buffs are removed, it reapplies a Mirror Image, Stoneskin and Protection From Magical Weapons. All in all, the Rukh has a lot of staying power, and also has in its possession three different potions it can quaff to heal or boost an ability (such as Potion of Invulnerability).
