Ruby Ray of Reversal will dispel one spell protection of any level.
Description[]
| “ | Ruby Ray of Reversal When this spell is cast, it dispels one spell protection of any level affecting the target creature. The spells that are affected by Ruby Ray Of Reversal are Minor Spell Turning, Minor Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity, Globe of Invulnerability, Minor Spell Deflection, Spell Turning, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, and Spell Trap. This will always dispel the highest-level spell protection affecting the target; if more than one same-level protection is active on the target simultaneously, one of them will be randomly chosen and dispelled. The target's Magic Resistance, if any, does not affect this spell. |

Gameplay[]
This spell is the first attainable spell remover for inclusion into a spell caster's spell book capable of removing all spell protections.
When the spell is cast on a target, a spell removal animation graphic is played over the target, and a text message is displayed on the combat log reading: "Spell Protections Removed". This text appears even if the target had no spell protections present, and even if there were multiple spell protections active. Only one spell protection will be removed (from the list in the spell description above).
A Spell Shield will block this spell, and then the shield will be consumed.
Spell Immunity: Alteration will not block this spell, even though Ruby Ray of Reversal is an Alteration school spell.
A Ruby Ray may be cast on a target who is invisible, sanctuaried or hidden.
The spell will bypass an illusionary protection such as Reflected Image or Mirror Image, even though the internal spell effects are not flagged to do so.
The spell description is missing Shield of the Archons and Magic Resistance (spell) as spell protections that can be removed by Ruby Ray.
Casting a Ruby Ray of Reversal on a neutral creature will turn them hostile, and perhaps others in the same vicinity.
Spell protections removed by Ruby Ray of Reversal[]
- Globe of Invulnerability
- Magic Resistance (spell)
- Minor Globe of Invulnerability
- Minor Spell Deflection
- Minor Spell Turning
- Shield of the Archons
- Spell Deflection
- Spell Immunity
- Spell Turning
- Spell Shield
- Spell Trap
Spell removal order[]
When a creature is protected by multiple spell protections, a Ruby Ray spell will remove one of those in the following order:
- Spell Shield (will consume both the Ruby Ray and the shield)
- The spell protection with the highest level (example Spell Trap before Spell Turning.}
- Spell Immunity usually one of the last
If two or more spell protections have equal spell levels, the Ruby Ray will randomly determine which spell protection is removed.
Example: - An enemy Lich is protected by Spell Trap, Spell Turning, and Spell Immunity. The party Paladin uses the Rod of Reversal to launch a Ruby Ray of Reversal at the undead monstrosity. The spell removes the Spell Trap, and the Spell Turning and Spell Immunity remain active on the lich.

Trivia[]
The Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset Wizard spell Ruby Ray of Reversal is based on the transmuter Nezram's ruby ray. Every time the ray is used, a ruby worth at least 1,000 GP is required. The ray has several possible uses in the Pen and Paper game, but it really isn't an anti-spell protection remover as implemented in the BG video game. For example, a ruby ray can spring mechanical and magical traps, untie knots, open Wizard locked and held portals, melt away a patch of webs, revert transformed individuals polymorphed or petrified and many other uses. Contrary to what the Bioware developed spell does, the Pen and Paper version explicitly states that a ruby ray cannot pierce an anti-magic shell or prismatic sphere.
