Rod of Smiting is an enchanted Quarterstaff +3 which can only be wielded by clerics and wizards. The rod is designed for fighting golems, it inflicts 10 7 more points of damage and they must make a saving throw vs. death every time they are hit or they get destroyed.

The item description says +10 vs. golems however in-game the effect is a total +10 and not a separate bonus, and this secondary damage is applied as a separate effect and thus both the weapon's regular damage and bonus +7 vs. Golems are both subject to Damage Resistance. Additionally, the Save vs. Death does not apply to Ice Golems, although the bonus damage does, and Magic Golems are immune to any attacks made with this due to their inherent immunity to any and all magic weapons.

To all other targets, it deals 1d8 +3 points of damage and it has -3 THAC0 bonus. The weapon weighs 3 lbs and has a speed factor of 1. This item appears in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. It is sold by the potions merchant in the Ust Natha bazaar.

Description[]

Rod of Smiting

This long, thin rod can be wielded as a staff. This rod has been designed to destroy golems. Any golem struck by the rod must make a saving throw or be destroyed. In the hands of any other than a cleric or mage the rod becomes unusable.

Bugs[]

  1. The item description incorrectly states +10 extra damage vs. golems. However, this is not applied to the item file.
