Disambiguation icon Not to be confused with Bloodied Tunic of Hayes.

The Robe of Goodman Hayes is a reward for completing Neera's Hidden Refuge. It provides permanent Chaos Shield on wearer in return for +1 penalty to Armor Class.

When Improved Chaos Shield is cast, its +25 bonus to the Wild surge roll should overwrite that of the Robe of Goodman Hayes' Shield for the duration of the spell. They should not add up to +40.

Description[]

This robe was fashioned for Hayes, the traitorous husband of Telana, soon after he discovered his talents as a wild mage. Very wealthy at the time, Hayes commissioned Halruaan wizards to craft it with silk, expensive dyes, and enchantments that could complement his unique talents.

Unfortunately, he wore it only twice: Its richness and clearly magical nature attracted of the Red Wizards who soon pursued him. He gave up using magic unless it was absolutely necessary, hid his robe away, and started wearing a simple tunic. His wife salvaged the robe and passed it on to Gorion's ward.

Gameplay[]

The robe is only wearable by characters who are morally Neutral (that is neither Good nor Evil), and by mages, which means that the only people who can wear it are Neera, Jan Jansen, or a neutral-aligned PC mage or sorcerer. Against physical attacks it's worse than useless (but then, that's what Stoneskin is for): and in general it is outshone by other robes such as Robe of Vecna, and probably even the Robe of the Neutral Archmagi - or, in Jan Jansen's case, his own personal suit, or any set of Elven chain mail. Its permanent Chaos Shield might make it a useful robe for a Neutral mage (whether Wild or not) or sorcerer to switch to in a Wild Magic zone, such as the two Wild rooms in Watcher's Keep , or the Wild Forest or Neera's Enclave: but even this depends on being able to switch into it before combat, since one cannot change armour in a fight, and by the time it is obtained, there are no enemies left in the Wild Forest or Enclave. At least it looks interestingly showy.
