Ring of Earth Control is a magical ring that provides the wearer with a 1-point Armor Class bonus and the wizard abilities to charm an Earth Elemental and cast Stone to Flesh once per day (although in actuality it's one time per rest for each ability).

Description

Ring of Earth Control

If the songs of bards are correct, all one must do is wear this ring and they will gain the ability to control earth elementals at will. Of course, earth elementals are not easily controlled and care must be taken when commanding one. An angry earth elemental can make short work of an inept adventurer.

Gameplay

While the ring provides the armor class bonus continually, the ring also has two spell-like abilities:

Charm Earth Elemental

Activate this spell from the "Use Item" button/icon and select an earth elemental with the targeting cursor.

Can attempt to charm any Earth Elemental creature, as long as their class is "Earth Elemental" - this encompasses lesser, ordinary, greater, and summoned earth elementals. The ring user selects the elemental to be charmed, and since the ring has a range of only 2 feet, the user will need to be adjacent to the creature for the spell to be utilized.

The elemental is allowed a Saving throw versus spell to resist the effect and also gets a 2-point bonus to the save. If the saving throw fails, the creature will be under a 45-second charm creature effect, and it is now a green circled controlled creature that can be directed by the party to move and attack. It can't do much else. After the charm expires, the elemental retains its original allegiance, so a hostile elemental before being charmed is hostile after the charm expires as well.

This charm effect cannot be dispelled and bypasses Magic resistance, which earth elementals normally don't have.

Stone to Flesh

Activate this spell from the "Use Item" button/icon and select a Petrified creature with the targeting cursor.

This casts the actual Stone to Flesh wizard spell at the target, with a range of up to fifty feet (realistically it's about 30 feet in terms of sight range).

After an ability is used, it will recharge after an eight-hour standard rest period.

Notes

  • The description given for this ring lists the range for the Stone to Flesh as "Touch", however it is actually a range of 50-feet.
  • In the original Shadows of Amn, the ring also provides the wearer with an erroneous 1-point bonus to all saving throw values. This was removed in the Enhanced Edition, as that was an error, and it was also removed for the original game if a user installed the BG2 Fixpack. In fact, all the original elemental control rings (air, earth, and fire) were bugged with the wrong charm type, and they could charm any creature. This too has been fixed.

Trivia

The elemental control rings found in the BG video game seem loosely based on the Advanced D&D 2nd Edition Dungeon Master's Guide as well as the Encyclopedia Magica source books.

The PnP ring versions have more abilities and elemental interactions than the videogame versions, and their name is different as well. See the external link below for further reading.
