The Rhinoceros Beetle is the largest and most powerful of the giant beetles encountered in Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear. Visually distinguished by their enormous gouging horn, rhino beetles are most distinctive in two specific ways: their favored food (monstrous spiders, especially their eggs) and the fact that, like ankhegs, their chitinous armor can be fashioned into lightweight but durable protection by skilled craftsmen.
Encounters[]
There is only a single Rhinoceros Beetle to be found in the entirety of Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear. Exploring the western chamber of the Spider Lair cave in the Forest of Wyrms will trigger the arrival of several monstrous beetles, including the more common Boring Beetle and Bombardier Beetle, as well as a single Rhinoceros Beetle.
Combat[]
If a party member is carrying Spider Eggs, the Rhinoceros Beetle will focus on pursuing that character above all others.
Loot[]
When slain, a Rhinoceros Beetle leaves behind a single Rhino Beetle Shell, which can be forged into either Rhino Beetle Plate or a Rhino Beetle Shield by Jegg at Bridgefort.
Notes[]
The Rhinoceros Beetle is one of several monsters in Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear that originally appeared in the game Icewind Dale, also by Black Isle. The notion of taking its chitin to a smith to fashion it into either armor or a shield is likewise taken from the same game.
