Resar is a Halruaan mage sent to Baldur's Gate to recover the three stolen secret "ingredients" of Halruaan skyship construction. He has asked Alatos "Ravenscar" Thuibuld for help in finding someone to perform the task.
Upon completion of the quest he will thank you and apologize that he must now kill you as you are a possible "loose end" in this furtive action. Only Resar will attack you, which does not damage your reputation with the Thieves' Guild (as long as there is no collateral damage to any of the nearby Rogues during the fighting).

Note: If you've successfully completed the Narlen's Heist side quest before attempting Alatos's quest, Narlen will backstab and kill Resar (in a cutscene) when he threatens you.
