The Cult of the Beast compound is an underground location added by the Region of Terror mod, visited via teleportation from Bremen.

It is the base of operations of a cult that worships an entity they call "the Beast".

How to get there[]

In Bremen, follow the side-quest "What is Matthew up to?". The portal in Matthew's home leads you to this cult compound.

Joining the cult[]

When you first arrive at the cult compound, Matthew Wyndon confronts you.
If you want, you can avoid violence by asking to join their evil cult.
(Otherwise, skip to #Destroying the cult below.)

Getting to The Highest[]

Region of Terror mod RA5500 Cult of the Beast level 1 friendly map

Matthew tells you that to join the cult, you must first gain access to the second floor of the compound[1].

Explore the maze to find the 6 blue stones on the corridor walls.
Things to consider while exploring:

  • Looting the weapons rack(600.1500) on the left side of the maze turns the whole cult hostile.
  • Fremor Shadowtail(1800.500) in the dormitory near the top edge of the maze sells some generic weapons, ammunition, and potions, and 3 mage scrolls.

To activate a blue stone, select a party member, stand as close as possible to the stone, and then click it.
Once you have activated all six blue stones, you are automatically teleported to floor 2 of the compound.

Test 1: Murdering a child[]

Region of Terror mod RA5501 Cult of the Beast level 2 friendly map

Feel free to explore this floor, but there is not much of interest. ("Ward" in the center-right part sells generic weapons and armor.)

When you're ready, talk to "The Highest" north of the map center. Agree to be tested for your worthiness to join the cult.

Your protagonist is isolated from the rest of the party, and an invisible "Voice" makes you declare your allegiance. To pass the test, you must answer "The Beast" four times.

A little boy is then teleported in front of you. To pass the test, you must murder him.

You are now considered a minor member of the cult, and receive 5000 exp per party member as well as the Cult Symbol [CULTSYM1] that lets you return to the cult compound whenever you are summoned.
Feel free to return to Bremen and spend time on other content while you wait to be summoned again.

Test 2: Tearing out eyes[]

3+ days later, the message "The Symbol vibrates" appears over your protagonist's head.
Return to the cult compound by using the Cult Symbol as a quick-slot item[2], and enter floor 2 again (you only need to click a single blue stone this time).

Talk to The Highest. He places your protagonist in a room with three human sacrifices, and gives you the Ritual Cup.

Click on each of the three sacrifices, and each time select the option "Tear out their eyes".[3]

The Highest then says "Now kill them". Do so, and he takes back the cup and rewards you with 4000 exp per party member.

Test 3: Drinking blood[]

4+ days later, the symbol vibrates again. Report to The Highest.

You take part in a ceremony in which cult members drink blood from a bleeding statue. When it's your turn, drink from the cup (or merely pretend to – it makes no difference).
You receive 4000 exp per party member.

Test 4: Winning duels[]

3+ days later, the symbol vibrates again. Report to The Highest.

Your protagonist, alone, must defeat 5 opponents (one after the other).

Opponent details
# Opponent Stats
1. Priest lvl 18 cleric • 70 HPAC -4
2. Fighter lvl 14 • 141 HPAC -3 • THAC0 0 • wielding Cursed Berserking Sword +3
3. Fighter lvl 16 • 137 HPAC -3 • THAC0 -2 • wielding Dragon's Bane +3
4. Mage lvl 15 necromancer • 75 HP
5. Greater Werewolf 94 HPAC 0 • THAC0 2 • can only be hit with cold-iron weapons or spells

You receive 4000 exp per party member.

Test 5: Slitting throats and bathing[]

5+ days later, the symbol vibrates again. Report to The Highest.

He places your protagonist in a room with four human sacrifices, and gives you the Ritual Dagger [RITTDAGG] to slit their throats with. Do so.[4]

The room then fills up with unholy water, and The Highest orders you to bathe in it. Do so (either naked or with clothes – your choice).

Test 6: Mass murder and torture[]

5+ days later, the symbol vibrates again. Report to The Highest.

Your protagonist is placed in a room with 10 civilians (men, women, and children). To pass the test, you must murder them all.

After that is done, The Highest summons another batch of 10 civilians for you to kill.

After that, The Highest summons 4 human sacrifices. For each one, click to interact with them and select 5 torture methods plus one execution method in the dialog window that pops up.

Walk up to The Highest again (ignoring the non-hostile skeletons that spawn and explode again). He gives you a cup containing the Beast's blood mixed with your own. Drink it.

You are now considered a full member of the cult. You receive 10,000 exp per party member, as well as an upgraded Cult Symbol [CULTSYM2] that works even when you weren't summoned.

If your protagonist is a female human, half-elf, or elf, and you chose to bathe naked during #Test 5, then The Highest now wants to have sex with you – but you can safely refuse.[5]

Life as a cult member[]

Whenever you want, you can now initiate dialog with The Highest in order to take part in a ritual. (These rituals are just cut-scenes at the end of which your party automatically rests.)

Back on floor 1 of the cult compound, you can now go to the weapons rack(600.1500) on the left side of the maze, and take one of the four weapons from it (as the Cult Member standing in front of it explains to you). Taking more than one still turns the entire cult hostile though![6]

Destroying the cult[]

If you turn the cult hostile – either immediately on arrival, or by for example failing a test during #Joining the cult – you have a fair amount of combat on your hand.

Floor 1[]

There are 18 cult member scattered around the maze, who attack on sight (and summon additional creatures):

While most containers only hold minor potions, one has unique weapons:

In order to reach the second floor of the cult compound, you have to activate the 6 blue stones found on the walls of the maze.
To activate a blue stone, select a party member, stand as close as possible to the stone, and then click it.
Once you have activated all six blue stones, you are automatically teleported to floor 2:

Floor 2[]

Mostly the same deal as the previous floor: Hostile cult members scattered about.

However, the cult leader ("Highest One") presents an especially difficult fight:

Boss iconHighest One:  details & loot
Enemy Stats Loot
Highest One lvl 35 • 207 HPAC -10
Cult Priest ×2 lvl 22 • 112 HPAC -5 minor loot

They instantly summon a Glabrezu and Cornugon when combat starts, followed by additional monster summoning and other spellcasting.

Combat advice:

There is no loot on this map other than what is dropped by the enemies.

In the room where you arrived on this map, you can click one of the two wall platforms to be teleported back to the previous map.
There, you can click the shimmering portal to be teleported back to Matthew's house in Bremen.
See Bremen ▸ What is Matthew up to? for the conclusion of the quest.

Footnotes

  1. He calls it the "Manor of the Beast".
  2. Returning via the portal in Matthew's home can cause you to get stuck in the cult compound with no way to leave other than cheat codes.
  3. It is implied that the eyes are placed inside the Ritual Cup. You can select other torture options as well, but the quest only checks for the eyes being torn out.
  4. By attacking them – either with the dagger or otherwise, it makes no difference.
  5. If you accept his advances, the screen fades to black and the party automatically rests, implying that the sexual encounter occurred. There are no further consequences.
  6. Technically, it's having more than one of these weapons in your party's inventory at the same time, that triggers the cult turning hostile. After returning the one you took, you can safely take a different one.
  7. 2 Elixir of Life [NEWPO01]
  8. 3 Potion of Vocalization [NEWPO03], 2 Elixir of Life [NEWPO01]
  9. Potion of Strength
