The Reflection Shield is a magical small shield with a +1 enchantment. Small shields have as a drawback that they do not give AC against missile attacks, but it is a desirable property for the Reflection Shield because of its peculiarity: It reflects successful missile attacks back to the sender. It is very similar to the Physical Mirror spell in that aspect.

The shield can only be bought from Ribald Barterman in his standard selection.

Description

Reflection Shield +1

Thought only a decoration from some forgotten festhall, this shield languished in the backroom of a shop until a young noble purchased it as parade armor. Its dormant enchantments were discovered when a later attempt on his life was foiled, as the shield reflected each attack back at the would-be assassins. Subsequent study has linked it to Myth Rhynn or perhaps some other ancient excavation.

Arrows from some area traps are also reflected: 17 ground traps out of 187 in Baldur's Gate II (9.1%), 8 container traps out of 145 (5.5%), but no door trap out of 31.

Finally, the following enemy-only attacks are reflected as well:

Differences with Physical Mirror[]

  • In Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, the only reflecting differences between the Reflection Shield and Physical Mirror are that only the mirror is able to catch Melf's Acid Arrow, whereas only the shield catches Angelo's arrow and all 7 of Eagle Eye's attacks.
  • In the original Baldur's Gate II, the differences are that only the mirror is able to catch Arrow of Ice, missiles from Tansheron's Bow and Melf's Acid Arrow, whereas only the shield catches Arrow of Fire, Firetooth's bolts, Bolt of Lightning, the spell Flame Arrow, a Fallen Solar's arrows, Angelo's arrow and all 7 of Eagle Eye's attacks.
  • While the Reflection Shield is only available in Baldur's Gate II, a Druid can become high enough level to use Physical Mirror in Siege of Dragonspear, The Black Pits and of course The Black Pits II: Gladiators of Thay. New attacks can be reflected in these games.

Bugs[]

  • When many reflexible projectiles hit the Reflection Shield in quick succession, only one is thrown back. Which one it is and whether it is sent back to the right creature is unknown to this wiki. Other reflexible projectiles in the batch are deflected and do not harm anybody.
  • In the original edition, the shield may not reflect projectiles but instead only deflect them. Whether reflection will be in a bugged state or not is (re)decided on certain not-so-frequent events, the only one known to this wiki being loading a saved game.
